Default trying something different with lsvtec

Im building a lsvtec setup and I have a few questions. Im going to use a 1st gen manual b16 head on a stock 98 b18b block. Im going for a different approach. I only want to rev to 7500rpms max just for reliability issues and the powerband I desire. Was wondering what stock cams should I use that would make the most power in between the 4000 and 7500 range? also would lowering my vtec point make more power in those ranges? thanks guys

Try GSR cams. You'll need to get it tuned to make the most power anywhere. Just changing the VTEC point could hurt power.

yeah well i meant lowering it and tuning it to make more power in those rpm ranges than past 7500 that i wouldnt be using. so you recommend gsr cams? anyone else with an opinion? thanks

It may be that you'll make more power by raising it, you never know until you get it on the dyno.

In all reality, the 7500 rpm limit you have set will not produce a good power curve for the VTEC head. Now the B16 and GSR cams are pretty comparable, however you will get a little bit more mid-range power out of the GSR cams. Type R or aftermarket will definitly make the most power, but the 7500 rpm limit will not let you make full use out of the cams. In my opinion, pull the crank out of your motor and have it balanced, get the stock rods stressed relieved and shot peened and ther you go...8500 rpm stock block! To be totally honest I have run a B20 stock block to 8500 and never once did it fail. I sold the block and the guy decided to hit 3rd gear after redlining in 4th, which tore the sleeves apart and threw a rod out of the block in 2 places. But the last few sentences are my personal opinion. And to make my opinion much sweeter, there is not a whole lot of cost going into balancing the crank or to shot peen the rods. I paid $30 for a balcance and $65 for the shot peen ( for all 4 rods). CHEAP INSURANCE

Something else to keep in mind, you wont have enough compression nor clearance(depending on cam, mill, etc.) to run anything much bigger than a gsr cam anyway.

Wouldnt that require me to take out the block?

So your telling me I wouldnt be able to put crower 403's with upgraded valvetrain on my stock block if I wanted to?

You dont have to take out the block but Im sure that it would make things easier... And yes you can use crower whatever with aftermarket valvetrain, but I can almost garuntee that your going to have to rev higher to make power... I wouldnt suggest running crowers stuff, just because Ive seen some of their cams break.... Contact Rocket about aftermarket cams n valvetrain.... I knew a guy who had a CRVTEC in his civic and reved to 8800 stock bottom end. He only had the motor in there for about 6 months before he threw something else in there but it was a wicked setup that hit a 12.4 jun stage IIIs n hondata and a really good tuner...

Where can I take it to the balance and shot peen done? How long do you think it would take for them to do?

machine shop, you can probably pick it up the next day, depending on how busy they are.

Maybe some ITR/CTR cams (awesome midrange) and widen the LSA with some cam gears? Thats my thought on the subject.
