Question about using the clutch while driving.
I was just curious if anyone had any real facts on this topic of what i have heard before. I have been driving stick shift for over 4 years and i have heard from friends that i should push in the clutch or shift to neutral wheneva i am not gasing it. Like for example when im driving on the highway and i need to slow down, i would push on the clutch and brake slowly or just shift to neutral and brake, when traffic picks up i would shift into gear again. My question is, is it bad for the tranny or any part of the car if i didnt push on the clutch or shift to neutral and just let go of the gas? I'm so used to it now that im sure i wont change my driving style but i just wanted to hear what some people on this board has to say.
Thanks
John

dude its a clutch you control the engine and you do what you want
if you leave it in gear the gear will help slow the car down when means less weare on the break pads and more wear on the trannie
if you take it out of nutural the car is costing and you use the break pads more
most people just leave it in gear and let it decelarate

i only engine brake when it snows out, works pretty damn good
and yes, i would rather have to replace my pads sooner than my tranny.

I just leave it in gear and downshift appropriately. For instance break in 4th until revs get to like 2K then downshift to 3rd etc. Its not bad if you do it right. Rev match properly and make your downshifts to the point where it feels smooth. I usually never downshift hard to slow the car down because, well, i just dont need to. I only downshift when i need to ricer flyby someone
