B16a1, B16a2, or B16b help!!!
I am gonna buy a motor for my crx and i need to know some pros and cons to the engines or personal opinions could help too.
As you all know B16a's are from the Si's and the B16b is from the CTR(Civic Type R) so can anyone help?

1G B16A pros:
1. Cheapest B16A
2. Comes with a cable transmission - no need to deal with the expense of buying the hydraulic mounts
3. ECU plugs right into the stock harness - no adaptors or soldering necessary
1G B16A cons:
1. Distributers have a tendency to fail
2. That retarded, twin oxygen sensor setup
3. Pre-1992 ECUs don't return the best fuel economy
4. California emissions legality issues - later, USDM parts needed to pass
2G B16A pros:
1. 170HP vs 160HP (JDM only)
2. Newer motor - probably lower miles and better condition
3. Fewer problems with California emissions - none if USDM and the USDM ECU is the only additional part required if the motor is JDM.
4. Better fuel economy
5. Generally better runners due to better electronics
2G B16A cons:
1. More complex wiring
2. Either hydraulic transmission mounting issues (if a cable transmission is not used)
3. More expensive
B16B pros:
1. 185HP - most powerful of the bunch by a long shot
2. Better rod ratio than a B16A
3. Higher compression ratio stock for better cam choices (without having to increase compression)
4. Gearing of B16B transmission better for acceleration
5. Higher rev limit
B16B cons:
1. Price - a B18C1 is cheaper and produces better results for most people
2. The taller motor (P72 block) requires removal of some of the underhood support
3. Hydraulic transmission mounting issues (if a cable transmission is not used)
4. Serious California emissions problems (since this motor was never sold here).

B16B!!!
If you have the money, I'd go that path all the way. If you want to see one in action in a Crx-sir. Rent or buy a movie called (BEST MOTORING International/Roaring VTEC, The battles at 10,000 rpms. You'll love it.

well I am willing to buy the b16b. ill be buying a regular crx and doing the work to it all myself. the b16b i am buying is from japan, under 35000 on the mileage, nad is $4400 and comes with transmission, ecu, and all required harnesses. Since the b16b has a higher rev limit, should I convert the cluster to a CTR cluster? or should i just make a custom one from a CTR cluster?
Yeah sorry, I ask a lot of questions. I am just so serious about this project. =]

If you're going to buy an R motor, don't bother with the B16B. It's too expensive for what you get. May as well go all out and get a B18C R spec, or get a simple B18C and upgrade it with the cash left over.
The lack of torque sucks.

will the b18 rspec fit in the CRX engine bay? i heard from others that its somewhat of a tight fit.
and about the cluster... im not too much into tach but what are the rev limits on them?

Both the B18C and B16B use the P72 block. External dimensions of the two motors are the same in every way.

I agree if u are goin to buy and R motor get the b18 alot more torgue. More options and possibilitys. Better bang for ur buck.
Hmotorsonline.com B16b 185hp/117trq 10:8 Jdm for 3850.00 and then B18c 180hp/126trq 106 Jdm for 3149.00
then the B18c R 200hp/134trq 11:1 Jdm for 4950.00

Unless you just what the B16B to say you have one</TD></TR></TABLE>
IF you are into racing on the street, or at the track and get challenged you can swap the valve cover for a black one and always say "just a B16", but they wont know you are talking about a B16B. unless they look at the block code.
the same cant be said about the B18C R. if you say im running a "B18" the natural reply is "oh you got an LS?" and/or they will ask to see, when the cover says VTEC your hustle is out the door.
