Bandsaw broken in less than first hour
Looking for a little help before I dig into the machine tomorrow myself.
I just picked up the 6.5" x 10" horizontal/vertical bandsaw from Grizzly today and decided to do a few test cuts with it tonight. I read the entire manual first, filled the cutting fluid reservoir, and checked out the belt tension as well. I also changed the speed to appropriate rpm's for the metal I was cutting. (It was prewired for 115v, so aluminum speed was 185, and mild steel was 150) The blade that comes with the machine is an 8 tpi I believe.
Aluminum cut without a problem. Then next I switched the speed to the middle setting (150rpm) to cut some angle iron. I cut one piece of it, raised up the blade to slide out some more metal to cut another piece, and then pressed start to cut again. This time nothing happens other than the pump pumping fluid. The motor I can hear humm for a while until it's little breaker trips. I thought something may be wrong with the gearbox, such as they shipped it without oil, but I looked in the hole with a flashlight and saw that there was in deed gear oil in there. I next tried spinning the drive wheel by hand after taking the blade off, but it seems stuck in place.
Anyone ever run into this type of problem with their saws? I don't want to take it back if I don't half to because it takes 2hrs one way to drive to the showroom here in PA. If anything I'll pull off the motor and open up the gear box to figure this out myself, but I'm just looking for other input first.

I would pull apart that gear box and flush and fill. I hope there isn't too much damage, but from the sounds of it there might be. Maybe you will luck out and it might only be some crud stuck or something simple.
Ok, we managed to fix the problem. We called the tech line and they told us this is a common problem. What happened was on an induction type motor, there needs to be a set of points touching for the capacitor to kick the motor over. These points have weights on them so once the motor is up to speed they pull away from centrifical force. There's a set screw to adjust the tension on them and it had managed to back out some. This is a problem from assembly at the factory. Other than that, it works fine again.
(this is my attempt of relaying what my father was explaining to me as I'm electrical-terms illiterate)
