96 Accord Tire replacement, serveral questions.
I plan to replace the tires I have on my Accord right now with the normal OEM size, 195/60R.
Right now, my car has the tires that were on it when I bought it; the front has "Classe Premiere Capitol" tires, odd tires made in korea that I have no idea what they are, and the rear has Warrior tires.
The Warriors still have excellent tread, but are pretty shitty tires. The fronts are getting lower on tread and they suck miserably in rain.
I wanted to replace my tires with something a little more performance oriented, but I'm not sure if I need that or not.
First tires I looked at were the Toyo Proxes TPT. They only have a treadlife of 400, though. That's pretty low. Belle Tire wants $450 installed on them, ouch.

Secondly, I'm looking at the Yokohama AVID Touring. The problem here is that they aren't actually performace tires, but at the same time they are 620 treadwear. Discount Tire wants $384, roughly, for the tires and installation.

The thing I'm worried about is that the front unknown weirdass tires have grooves shaped sort of like "performance" tires. So if I were to go with the AVID touring, I'd be worried that I would lose grip and performace.
I don't track, this is just a daily driver.
I just want to know what everyone thinks about the AVID touring; and also to give me some input on other possible tires that won't break past the $400 line.
CLIFFS: shitty tires, want to replace them with something a bit more performace that have decent treadlife.
thanks.

First of all, tires with good performance are soft and do not have a high treadwear. High treadwear rating = hard tires = not very good gripping performance. A 400 treadwear rating is a fairly high amount and will last you a good while. If you want an all-season tire that is fairly good in wet and dry traction I recommend the Falken ZIEX ZE-512. The treadwear rating is 360 and is very inexpensive.
well, here is what I'm thinking.
my car is a 96 accord EX, stock. I don't need a tire that will out perform the car. I drive and corner pretty hard quite often, but it's not like I'm driving track or anything.
will the AVID touring still be a good enough tire for a stock car? or will I really notice anything if I went with something more performance oriented?

The AVID's aren't that bad of a tire if you need an all season that will last a long time. My sister has a set of 205/60 AVID's on her 96 Accord SE and they fair well for the car. The Falken ZIEX 512 is probably a little cheaper and grips better than the AVID and it's by no means a performance tire. It was made as an all season that performs well in both wet and dry conditions. The only downfall is the slightly lower treadwear rating compared to the Yokohama AVID.

The AVID is more of a touring tire. You mentioned that you sometimes corner hard with your car, but it's not like you auto-x or track it or anything. I don't think you would be happy with a touring tire if you "enjoy" driving your car hard sometimes.
Allow me to suggest the Dunlop SP Sport A2 Plus.

This tire is available right now on the Tire Rack for $53.
The Tire Rack has tested this tire on 2 occasions where it basically tied for 1st place against the Bridgestone RE950 and Bridgestone G009 in each of the two tests.

The "A2 plus" has been engineered for a longer treadlife (50,000 mi warranty) compared to the previous "A2", while also maintaining good handling charactaristics and a comfortable ride. The UTQG traction rating for this tire is "AA" which means it rocks in the wet. It is also designed to be an all season tire, capable of handling the snow you will surely see in Michigan during the winter months.
I have heard positive feedback from many people about this tire, and would not hesitate to recommend them. For the price and what you are looking for in your case, I don't think you can buy a better tire.
Please let me know if you have any other questions!
Thanks,
Matt
