i replaced the ECT on the thermostat housing i checked the under hood fuse and the fuse under the dash. both fuses are good, fan turns on when i jump (speaker wire in each inlet) the plug that goes on the ECT
I know this may kind of sound weird but you may just need to replace the thermostat. I was working on one of my customers cars and the temp gauge kept on shooting up because the fan would not turn on. I tested everything and it turned out to be the thermostat. It wasn't opening up and it fixed it. By the way, I also jumped the connector and the fan would on. Hope this helps.
have you checked your fan relays? i'm not sure if thats what you meant by "under hood fuse" a good way of checking it is if you have a/c, just switch the relays because i BELIEVE they are one in the same. if not just borrow a buddy's. gl

same thing is happening to me but temp gauge is always in the middle and fan does not turn on. No idea what is going on and have switched all the parts out as well.. anyone else got a great idea?
when the car gets hot enough, you can feel the hose from the thermostat housing get hot enough which means the thermostat ok, since the water is flowing. Now you said you jumped the fan and it runs. The only thing left is the thermofan switch located on the thermo housing. Ive never heard of fuses nor a relay on this, I could be wrong.. Also check the condition of the wire that connects to this fan switch.
good luck.
good luck.
Worst case scenario, just rig the wires for your fan. That's what I had to do in my 95 hatch with a GSR swap. Couldn't for the life of me figure out what the hell was going on, so I just wired the live wire from the fan to a same amperage fuse under the hood that was only on when the car was on.

Mine does the exact same thing. It only overheats if you leave it running for 30 minutes without the heat on. It only happened once and I had to drive the car. As soon as the car started moving the temp went down. I think it is my ect though

yea mine isnt the ect, i've changed that, checked the fuse, check almost every damn thing and yes the fan works... just dont know what th eheck is wrong. I've even left the fan on in the car at idle and it still stays at 1/2.. <SHRUG>
my car overheated while at a stop. the fan never came on.. and i found that it was a faulty coolant temp sensor (is that just different term for ect?). replaced the temp sensor and it ran fine. for the time being i shorted the sensor plug and had the fan running 24/7
the same thing happened to mine in the past, to prevent the car from overheating i had to jump the fuse under the hood to make my cooling fan work. I thought it was a bad fan so i changed it..and i thought it was the main relay under the hood but it was tested to be working, then took it to my friend that works at the dealership and he told me it was 1 of my sensors, it was the sensor by the thermostat.
it seems to me like we are all talkin gbaout sensors with all different names. which is which? Sorry I just dont know all the sensors. Last i checked there was one main sensor and that was the the thermostat one where you can check in hot water to see if it opens or closes. are there more freaken sensors? Last I check on the diagram there wasnt...

There is one more sensor and it located on the passenger side of the motor, underneath the distributor. That sensor is the gauge sensor.

Are you jumping the relay? Does it turn on if you do?
If you want the fan always on, just about everything but the switch that screws into the engine needs to be working. You jump the relay with an inch or two of wire, I know it's diagonal in my Del Sol, I think top left to bottom right, but it could be the other way around.
