How do you tell the Type-R gearbox from the GS-R gearbox ????
I am trying to purchase a used Type-R gearbox, but they share the S80 code with the GS-R gearbox.
Is there a way to visually tell the difference between the two ???
Thanks

Yeah, but this only tells you if it's LSD... It could be a GSR tranny with an ITR diff...
The best way would be to check for the stamp, as BSQ has stated, or to check for the VIN (that's if it's still there)... All USDM ITR trannies should have VIN plates on them, as they were all OBD II... An ITR VIN will be a DC231 and GSR would be either a DC238 or DC239...

The stamp can be duplicated or could be deteriorated. I would prefer a GSR tranny with an LSD diff over a GSR tranny with an ITR LSD stamp on it.

This is true, that's why I also mentioned to check for a VIN plate...
If it's a USDM ITR tranny, then it should have a VIN plate, unless it's been removed for whatever reason...
