I have the cylinder head off for a rebuild. I had been suspecting that my rings are worn, 72K miles on them.

What is the best way to check without tearing the block apart?

I was told by some people that the leak down test would tell me but other say it would not.

Leak down test would be best had you not pulled off the head. Might as well just pull out the pistons now and check.

 

a leakdown test can tell you if it's a valve (intake or exhaust), headgasket, or ring problem.

You just feel where the air is coming out of.

leak down test had been done before the head had come off and everything was cool. It burns alot of oil, just making sure it is not the rings.

I had an SMS 2.5 exhaust put on a month ago, right before the exhaust the pipes are held together with a strap not welded, for easier removal.
Anyways, when I went for a tune I was looking down there and there was oil seeping from that connection, enough that it was still wet and ready to drip.
did not think it would pass that much oil.

You sure you burning the oil?

Sounds like a leak is the cause of the oil consumption.

What were the results of the leakdown?

 

The leak down was all below 5% after the new headgasket and before the exhaust.

 

if the head is off look to at the pistons and if the edges around the pistons are clean than ur rings need to be replaced. this is caused by the oil getting into the combustion chamber and cleaning off the carbon on the pistons.
