H22A1 and H23A1 Confusion
Ok my engine hydrolocked and blew the crap out of my engine block and various other adjacent parts. I had an H22A1 which is a 2.2L correct? I've heard of people converting their H23A1 to VTECs but I don't know much about that. So is there much advantage to this? Because the H23As are the SI motor which is a 2.3L right? How much does is cost for a conversion like this? I took my car to the shop and they couldn't get their hands on another H22A so they grabbed an H23A motor and used it with my VTEC, and to my knowledge some stuff has to be changed / modified? So.. Did I get screwed or did this actually come to be in my favor? And btw I took it to the engine house.

yes lots of stuff will need to be changed...but with all the hassle involved it would be much cheaper and easier on you to just buy another h22 online

an h23 vtec does has the torque advantage, but this comes at a price

thats the thing, as far as i know everything has been modified. the shop remachined a buncha parts and put it together. ive been told that the h23 block / h22 head is unreliable. did i lose hp but gain torque? or did i gain both? i paid em to put another h22 in there but when they gave it back to me i got an h23 with my vtec head on it. sooo... -lost-
the h23vtec is a badass setup, it is unreliable from what people say b/c of the rod to stroke ratio, but it also depends how you drive it. im in the process of building one right now and i say go for the h23 vtec, more torque, more hp, more money...
It is NOT unreliable. It is because people rev the hell out of the motor to stay in VTEC when shifting gears.
If you make your redline at 7000 rpms, you will be fine. Rev it more than that and you are asking for trouble.....which is why the motor has gotten negative press. Most people can't limit the revs to 7000.
H23 VTEC is perfectly safe. Just don't beat the hell out of it and you will be fine.

ok i feel a lot better about the conversion they did. thanks a lot for the feedback.
what kind hp / torque gains would it have tho?
