input shaft bearing giving out, again?

If you have noise with the clutch disengaged (pedal in) then it's the throw out bearing. But the throw out bearing doesn't really make a squeaky noise, it's more grinding.</TD></TR></TABLE>
(the above is from a old thread)
I'm having a sound eminating from the transmission area. a Slight hissing sound might be eminating while driving in gear (its hard to tell). While in gear (and at speed), if i clutch in, the tranny winds down, followed by a blow off valve style sound. With the clutch in, no noise at all.
At neutral with clutch in or out, no sound.
This leads me to believe its an input shaft bearing, or other internal tranny bearing at play here...
Strange thing is, first 25k miles of the tranny worked flawlessly (stock)... then I had a 4.7 FD installed around 15k miles ago (40k on the clock). Bad Input shaft bearing detected right after the install. It was replaced with a new one...now 15k miles again come along, and I think I have another bearing failing...
anyone know what gives, or what could cause the tranny bearings to give out like this?

Honestly I had a similiar type of hissing sound and blow off sound before my tranny blew up on me just recently. I am not trying to scare you because you seem like yours isn't as bad as mine was.
But the input shaft I believe would make noise even in neutral with the clutch up..... And I believe you said in neutral you have no noises. Maybe pop the hood and have someone give it gas while you try and listen very carefully for any noises from that area.
The blow off sound could be coming from a testpipe or hollow cat if you have one because sometimes at the right rpms, mine did that with the hollow car before I got my smsp testpipe.
I dunno man, Good luck, I am sure someone on here can help you out

I personally wouldn't bother with any tranny noises, because I tried to cure mine and didn't succeed after two repairs. I have replaced almost all bearings inside, I have also measured all clearences in the trany and the noise is still there

than maybe its not the tranny.......

i sure did Rob, it doesnt sound like that...yet atleast
A slight update...
if im in neutral, and not moving and rev the motor then let off the throttle, noise is present.
if im in neutral, clutch in, and while clutch in, i rev the motor and let off the throttle, noise is still present.
In fact, the noise sounds like its coming from closer to the IM than the tranny...
what I cant figure out is...wtf could be causing this rpm dependant noise?

If you're getting the noise with the clutch in, then it's not the input shaft bearings. Tranny isn't spinning then, so it wouldn't be making noises. Input shaft bearing make noise when clutch is out (in neutral or moving in gear).

yep! thats what I thought...thanks for confirming...hopefully this will be a good archive thread in the future..
for now, anyone have any clue what could sound like a bearing winding down, outside of the tranny area? This has me stumpe.d..a few other things that come to mind is the distributor rotor somehow hitting something, alternator issues, looose heatshield.. (though it doesnt sound like a rattle)
maybe my car is set on implode mode

pilot bearing? was the tranny repaired by the same place that put in the fd?
Loose flywheel bolts? Did you replace them with new ones when/if you removed the flywheel?
Double check the clutch pedal adjustment against Helms. Maybe its not fully releasing?
there are plenty of other things that could cause this...see if you can find somone with a ultrasonic leak detector. I have one at school, man is it sweet. Its basically a electronic stethoscope. Or do the old fasioned screw driver to the ear deal. Maybe the oil seporator box on the back of the motor isn't sealing, or PCV valve. Vaccum leak? Does the car idle funny? Maybe your starter isn't bolted down all the way? Loose bolt anywhere. How sure are you of where the sound is coming from? (Alternator is on the other side). Anything inside the dist. messing up, and your car would run really funny. Maybe check all the vac. lines going to the charcol canister. Check all the emissions lines. Maybe your EVAP valve? I could go on and on.
BTW, hows the fluid level? Anything covering the breather tube on the top of the tranny? Bad VSS?

Thanks for the extra insight.
VSS should be fine.
nothing is covering the tranny "hole".
At this point since since its pretty confusing as it really does sound like a bearing noise, but yet coming from the rear of the motor (between motor and firewall), i'm going to have a few others listen to it, to see what they think... I've even thought about really loose valves, but that wouldnt be the case since i've adjusted them around 15k miles ago.. (they should be loose, but not loose enough to sound like a bad bearing
)
everything is stock, asides the FD in the transmission and the lightweight flywheel.
I get a hunch the tranny is coming off, and if it is, i'll be sure to check out the flywheel bolts (add some threadlock if needed), replace the throwout/release/pilot bearing.
any other suggestion guys or past insights?

Your prolly find that it is i fact the trans. bearings. The more FDs I do, the more I see these bearings faulty. Also, your more than likely going to find that the noise is not just one bearing...replace all five. Make sher the spring washers are installde correctly, then use Honda MTF (2.5qt) or Redline synthitic lightweight gear oil. I haven'tpersonally heard your car but, from what your describing, this is a common complant.

even with the fact when the clutch is in (pressed fully) and the noise can still be heard (only when i rev in neutral ... like a blip on the throttle), its still possibly the transmission bearings? how does that one work?

what, you only want his advice on that?
lol, well, the pilot bearing, being in the flywheel, still can make noise because its touching the input shaft which is not spinning at the same speed because the clutch is in.

Here's one, you're an ******* and don't deserve anyone's help.
(Come on, someone here read the post and thought it... hehehe)
But seriously, if you had a vacuum leak near the IM you should be able to hear it... and it would idle funny. Regardless, since you can make it happen standing still (good news!), get under your hood, grab the throttle cable to rev the motor, and listen around.
p.s. you can make a stethoscope out of a long piece of metal (socket extension or copper pipe, for example, but the thinner the better).
Holding one end of it with your pinky and your palm, and using the other fingers, palm and thumb to make a cup around your ear. Touch the other end of the socket extension to your tranny, IM, whatever, and listen to all the neato mechanical sounds in your ear on the other end.

actually, i've done that with the throttle cable this morning...
i also have an actual stethoscope from back in the day when i was an EMT.
but...scary news is...drive home today...the noise went away, or atleast, i cant hear it anymore!
i dont know if thats bad or good news...im leaning towards bad news.
i'll play around with it for the next day or two...theres a meeting coming up, so i'll have a few fellow buddies look at it too

Even better. Might be kinda loud though.
The noise going away is good news. I hate noises.
Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.
(This one, I don't know the origin of.. but Google to the rescue!
"Don’t question the value of a gift. The proverb refers to the practice of evaluating the age of a horse by looking at its teeth. This practice is also the source of the expression “long in the tooth,” meaning old.")

some pretty weird @#$!@ going on....BOV noise is gone.
All sounds normal now except when going over speed bumps, in which case i hear a thunking sound, makes me think its a motor mount that died...
but this afternoon, taking it out a bit...the thunking sound went away too....WTF!!!!
