When I first start my car (and I noticed this happens mostly when it is hot out), it runs very rich (smells nasty), and sputters bad. I have to either let it sit for about 2 to 3 minutes, or smash the gas down and let it smooth out. Any ideas on what this is. I searched, but I could not see anyone who is having this issue as I am only at start up.

 

Is your timing set to spec?

 

Wow, good question. I did not check my timing. Need to borrow a timing light from friend first. You think that would cause it to run rich when the car is first being started?

 

timing could be messed up. how's your o2 holding up? replace a fuel pump lately? need details on your fuel system. Usually sputtering like that is because there is too much fuel in the cylinder to ignite.

The smelling and bogging could be two different issues. Most hondas smell pretty bad until the cat warms up and starts working.

 

i thing for sure is that it is one of your fuel or igniton parts. when my civic was doing that it was my spark plug and wires. Yau might wanna check those out. THen check the cap and rotors.

I did not really check the o2 and did not change the fule pump either, although I have to say that I was thinking along the line of too much fule in the cylinder, because after reving in real high RPM's for a few seconds, it seems to smooth out, which tells me that the excess fuel has been burned out.

I can almost guarantee that it's not your 02 or fuel pump. Your 02 will change the A/F ratio, but only to a certain point.

It's probably your cold idle valve, and the reason that it smooths out after reving is because the car is warming up.
