Default Goodbye Wiesco pistons....

isd this weird problem with my car for a while now, when you start the car in the morning it's find. But when you start the car when it was hot/warm, it would sound like a Scubby, like the motor was blown and the engine would shake alot but after like 20 secs it goes away and would rev normal.

Didn't think nothing of it till after my OBD1 conversion dyno was done. Took the spark plugs out and look into #4 cylinder and saw a little bit of water. So the only thing that came to my mind was the HG leaking. Got a new Cometic HG and next week I was going to change it. Hoping nothing esle was broken.

Next week came and come to my supprise when I lifted the head off those PITB ARP head studs. I find chunks missing off the Wiesco pistons. These were the 81.5mm 9:1 compression slugs. Only #4 & #3 were broken, the other 2 were fine. Cylinder walls were not scarfed up and just need a slight hone.

These Wiesco pistons were notched at at the edge.
The head is fine, no scratches, turbo is fine nothing damaged either. My questions what would caused this to only 2 cylinders??
Injector leaning out??
My stock B16 IM is not sufficient enough to supply the air it needs??
Or could it be a defective piston??
I have never seen another version of my pistons like that where it was notched on the outside ring....Here are some pics of the pistons when I bought them last year and noticed the notched area when compared to a pic taken from Importbuilder.com.

And here is the pic I found at Importbuilders.com where this looks like the same piston. but it did not have the same notches like mine.

Will upload the broken pistons pics tonight.

That spot on the side of the piston looks sketchy to me.
I would have never put that in my motor. Did all 4 pistons look like that? Were they custom and what was the compression?

All 4 pistons were the same, new in the box with rings.
Sorry for the blurry pic but this was taken long ago by the seller.

According to Wiseco, these are 9:1 slugs for my B16.

The reason you see that is because its a small bore. In the pic from IB its a larger bore so it wont have that, nor will any other large bore piston. What you are looking at is normal.

Well #3 & #4 were broken where those notches were at.

You know what the funny part is, now some of my friends are telling me that Wiseco pistons are no good that once you get pass 300hp it would fail. But before they were like yeah they are awesome and stuff and blah blah blah.

But oh well thank goodness the walls were not scarffed up so it only needs a hone and it's good to go.

Thinking about getting Mahle pistons now.

They were broken where the notches were at probably becuase the pistons werent prepped well by the builder and shaved down. If those are ruff like they usually come from the factory that will be a more prone spot for detonation. Weisco's come out alot cleaner then others I have seen.

Also that is bullshit about Weiscos not being good for past 300whp.

Point in case though. Anything will fail under detonation. Some get lucky sometimes and others dont.

Actually I am the builder, but I sanded the pistons down and made all the edges smooth as I can before the pistons were put into the block and the weight of each piston were measured to make sure it was close as it can be.

Like I said detonation will kill anything. I detonated and melted my pistons at the same spots you did. Its just more prone for that area.

My wiseco B16 9.0's looked just like that; others being thinner then the rest. Has anyone else broken this chunk off their pistons?

Did you inspect the sides of the piston for scuffing along the skirt? Did the plugs have any signs of heat damage?

I think your friends were talking about SRP instead of Wisecos actually. Wiseco has a low or zero silicone content same as Arias, JE, Ross, CP etc etc. The SRP has a HIGH SILICONE content for mild set ups and they are not supposed to slap as bad as zero/low silicone pistons due to less heat expansion from the pistons due to the material sir.

No scarffing of the skirts that I noticed. When I get home Pics will be posted to better illustrate the aftermath.

Well people are people and they will always say good **** till something happens. I don't pay any attention to BS like that anyways.
I would get another set of Wiseco pistons but I am getting a killer deal on the Mahle's so

I can almost guarantee there has to be some kind of detonation or some sort.

You might want to look at the exhaust wheel in your turbo just to make sure none of the blades got chipped.
