Default defective timing light? How can you tell?

I've a Craftsman Advanced Inductive Timing Light that I'm having trouble with.
I've tried in three diffrent cars without any results.

I hook up the inductive clamp into the #1 sparkplug wire and to the ground and battery. When I pull on the trigger, nothing.

How can I tell if the timing light is broken?

stupid question... is your car running when you're using it? are you hearing some kind of noise from the gun when you squeeze the trigger? perhaps the bulb went out?

Yes, the car is running. I don't hear anything. This timing gun is brand new. And I don't know if the bulb is replaceable.

It sounds like you just picked it up? If so, I'd just take it back, sounds defective.

On a lot of timing lights, the clamp for the plug wire is directional, there's an arrow pointing to the coil or something similar. Make sure it's hooked up the right way, and make sure everything has a good connection.
