Default my first diy turbo

well I finally got everything I need for my hmt, except for the fuel management, I was gonna go fmu but after reading about chrome and uberdata you guys changed my mind. Im knew to the whole chip burning thing, so I just wanted to know what burner is the best, what things do I need, how much for the whole thing, is it cheaper and better than a $100.00 dollar fmu, and do I need to change things like fuel pump fuel injectors or anything else. please don't flame me I've been reading about this for days on pgmfi and ht but its just to much info and I cant seem to find or understand what I need. Your help is greatly appreciated thanks.

its a shitload better than an fmu. youre looking at about 150 shipped for a full done chipped p28, 45 for a burner. you really need a fuel pump and injectors.

I still dont get it, if I buy a chip do I have to tell them what boost im running what engine and if I want to raise the boost later do I have to reprogram? then what if I buy a burner,I just burn it myself and I can sell burnt chips on ebay to make up the money for it. rite?

Well when it comes to fuel management, you really shouldnt cheap out, just save up if you dont have the money. as far as chipping the ecu and tuning it. i'm more than sure that there is an experienced tuner in ca. just post up on here and hmt.com i'm sure you'll find someone in your area. Also you will need bigger injectors, not sure on your motor or setup but 440cc or 550cc injectors should be fine. I would also upgrade to a walbro 255lph in tank. its a good cheap insurance. and if you dont already have a fpr and gauge get one. hope it helps

ah yes- now you're talking hehe.

you download the uberdata program to your computer, then go buy a chip burner.
i got the usb powered burn1 unit from craig moates. it was like 80 bucks i think, but it works very well.

you dont really need a fuel pressure regulator, but you will definately need larger injectors. the 450 cc injectors out of turbo dsm's are a damn good deal for the price, and they fit obd1 injector clips with slight mods.

if you are really looking to read and learn up, check out the uberdata website, http://www.ecimulti.org/uberdata , and sites such as http://www.boosted-hybrid.com, who have amazing amounts of great tuning tips and strategies/info

There's really two ways to do it.

1. Buy the burner, some chips, a wideband, laptop (if you don't have) and some time to read up on how to tune yourself (get a feel for using the programs)

2. Send the ecu out and have a "ecu guy" do the chipping and set you up with a basemap. There are lots of base map library's where a similar setup to yours should be able to be found. Then take it to a dyno tuner and have them fine tune it.

The first way is by far the best as you get to learn how to tune it yourself. I'd say these two options cost about the same in the long run. The only big difference is #1 will take you time to get acquanted with all your new hardware and how to use it, and #2 is something you could have done tomarrow. These are the options as I know them. Good luck.

by wideband do you mean the air to fuel ratio gauge that I have or is that something else?

no the standard narrowband afr gauge is completely worthless. A wideband o2 sensor allows you to accurately measure your afr to tune your car.

so if i install the uberdata e prom chip myself for around $15.00 and take it for a tuning sesion would they program a base map for me and hence I wouldnt have to buy a burner and the widband and do do it myself?

If you bought the burner and wideband, you would have everything you needed to fine tune it. So buying the wideband and burner and then taking it to the dyno would cost you twice as much rather than doing #1 or #2.

You're trying to do either or. Basemaps can be downloaded and burned. Fine tuning is where either your wideband/laptop/burner come in, or a dyno tuning session.

i think it really sucks bc even if you program it yourself and tune it you still have to go and ditch alot more money to get it tuned by a tuner place and thats from 150-300 bucks. I was told if you boost 6 psi or less all you need is FMU which i'll go that rout b/c I ain't boosting to raacee and go pass 7 psi anyway mine will be more to have it when i need it but i don't need 220 hp with 160 i'll be happy and still cruise normal and make my 33 mpg

so I think I can get uberdata for almost the same price as an fmu without a tune, if i just buy and install my eprom and a datalloger myself and have the uberdata tuner burn and tune my chip for my set up, wouldn't they have a wideband to use on my car? since I don't have one

a tuner and/or dyno will have a wideband to use. if they dont, they shouldnt be doing what they do hehehe
