Default EF Tranny isnt puttin out to the wheels?? help

My friend has an 88 ef hatch and we were goin down i-20 and since his speedo doesnt work i'd say we were goin about 65-70 and he drops it in 3rd and it damn near redlines and he puts it in neutral and coasts to the exit and then to the stop light on the service road. He then puts it in gear and trys and go but when you release the clutch and give it gas (normal way of driving a standard) it still doesnt move but its not bogging out like its gonna die when you let off the clutch and give it gas like your driving, but its not going anywhere either. when you let off the clutch without giving it gas it boggs out like normal. Im guessing the clutch is still engauging but somethin in the tranny took a **** and we have no idea what it is. any info on this would be much appriciated.

i think the tranny is just blown, cuz the other other possibility is the clutch and it is still engauging

Was there any abrubt noises when this happened? It could be the trans or clutch. Does it make any distinct sounds when the clutch is engaged or depressed? Is there a difference in tone in trans/clutch when it is engaged/depressed? There's multiple reasons that it is not engaging. But a rule of thumb is to start with the small stuff and work your way up. Check the shift linkage, check the clutch cable, check to make sure the axels are still seated within the trans[if there is no load on the tranny the axels wont spin, it will sound as iff your in neutral]. Start there and post any sounds/feelings the car gives. Could be something simple, could be a dead trans. - Darrell

the motor runs fine. so i dont think i threw a bearing.

how could my axels just pop out?

with the sounds dohc, everything sounds the same when i disengauge the clutch and accellerate (well try to) it just sounds like im reving it in neutral. the clutch peadle feels fine, not the cable, shift linkage i think is fine cuz it doesnt feel any different.

he said throw-out berring, thats in the tranny, not the block...

you better hope that axle slipped out, or you blew the clutch, worst case would be need a new tranny.

does that make it more clear for you?

same thing's been happening to me. but usually happens when i rev past 3k, then it'll just keep revving but power isnt being put down on the wheels. i'd be changing my tranny soon so i hope my current HF tranny don't give out before that.

Same thing happend to me but the clutch exploded. Could be the clutch, clutch cable broke, Tranny is fucked. Tell him to push the clutch in rev it high and try second. maybe the spline for 1st is messed.
