Default Electrical Power Loss

Well I just picked up a 91 Civic DX Hatch yesterday and today is the first full day of driving it. Driving it home last night, and to work this morning everything was fine, but on my way home tonight as I got closer to home on the highway my Tach started to jump up and down. Minutes after the tach just stop and went to 0 RPM. All lights inside the car started getting dimmer and dimmer as I kept driving ex.(Gauge Cluster, Stereo shut right off, Digital Clock) and also out side lights (Headlights, signals would not work anymore). I managed to get it home and all and it is late so I cant really take a close look in the dark.
After I shut it off, I tried to start it up again, and when I put the key in the ignition to the ON position my dome light went on and stereo started to work again, but it would not even crank over. Anyone have any experience with something like this that could please let me know what is the matter.

Sorry for all the babling...

Check your grounds. The one from the valve cover. The one from the battery and all you can spot.

I have also been told it may be the alternator, could this be a possibility?

Well we think its the alternator and we are going to undertake replacing it. Only problem is the key for the lugs on the drivers side broke and its between 16-17mm. Nothing fits so we will have to do it without removing the drivers side axel.

Any tips on doing this without removing the axel would be appreciated as we are possibly doing this tomorrow and in the dark after work.

Oh yeah BTW I am I3ackfires Uncle aka the stupid schmuck thats going to help.

Aparently it was a faulty battery cable that caused the problem. And he has been enjoying his car since it was fixed a few days later.

Just incase someone has the same problem I thought I would add that note.
