Comp Cams 59300 and Springs P/N 912-16 need titanium retainers or no?
I'm not really excited about having to deal with replacing titanium retainers every 30k... and I certainly don't want to deal with blowing my engine...
SO...
What's the concensus? Do I NEED the titanium retainers or would I be better off with some brand new stockers possibly heat treated or coated?
Again I'm going based on budget and longevity... I can't afford to be changing retainers every 30k. Although this is my second car now not a DD so I guess 30k might take a little longer than it used to.
Anyone have any experience with these springs and cams w/o retainers...
Or Does anyone have any experience with these springs and cams WITH retainers.
Just want to make as informed a decision as possible...
Possibly relevent info.
93 civic EC Coupe
203,000 miles
All stock other than intake header exhaust some ignition parts but that's about it.
Plan on going turbo eventually but not in the near future. Too POH!

Thanks for the input...
See I had heard that lots of people were running that cam on a stock valvetrain... which I still may end up doing...
I'm concerned though with using the springs and not the retainers... I'm wondering if I would be better off leaving the springs and retainers stock and just doing the cam...
Or doing the cam and springs then do new stock retainers... or possibly the titanium retainers...
I don't mind spending the money on the ti retainers... I mind if they need to be replaced again in 30k miles...
Also anyone know how much longer the life expectancy would be for the titanium retainers if theyr'e nitrated?
Or how much stronger the stockers will be if heat treated and nitrated?
I'm looking to spend the minimum amount of money without short changing the reliabilty of the engine.
203k miles of BEATING on the car and it still runs like a top.
Also keep in mind I don't plan on reving the car ANY higher than I do now 7200rpm

Thanks,
I'm getting the springs for sure... they were included in the auction for the cam... the guy who bought them opted not to get the retainers because of fear of cracking/replacing...
I'm just wondering if I should go ahead and get new stock retainers and have them heat treated and possibly coated... or if the stockers with 203k miles would be alright...
I guess better safe than sorry...
Also does anyone have any info on the comp cams claim that they're retainers prevent dropping a valve?
i've been trying to get through to their helpline but can't sit on the phone all day at work.
Thanks for the input.

i wouldnt go nuts over getting the retainers. i had planned on running a skunk cam on stock retainers(its a lil more aggressive than the zex). i sold it to someone who is running it on stock springs and retainers revving to over 7500 no probs.
keep it under 8 grand and youll be fine with springs only. i think the cam stops making power at 7800 anyway..

Not necessarily required but a added insurance. As long as you don't go over the stock rev limit you will be find.

Sweet thanks guys...
I'm going to be staying under the stock revlimit as it's still in place...
My buddies shop has a dyno they use for state emissions testing and they're pretty sure they're going to be getting the HP module eventually... when/if they do I'll get a hondata in preperation for going turbo... then I'll be able to see where it's making power and whether or not I feel like getting the retainers.
For now I'll just drop the cam and springs in and run it for a while at stock rev range.
Thanks for all the input guys.

Well just want to bump this one more time see if anyone has DEF. done this...
No retainers on the Comp cams springs and cam...
I could leave off the springs for now if it's less risky... just don't really want to spend any more money right now...
But I might just break down and buy the retainers.
Opinions please.
