Default Vtec controller with check engine light

I have installed a vtec controller but when I accelerate at a slow rate and Vtec comes on my CEL comes on with the Vtec code. If i accelerate fast and go through the gears i have no problem, but if i am cruising in lets say 3rd at 35 mph and i hit the gas and let vtec come on with my rpm slowly climbing my CEL will come on and its always the same vtec code. I have pretty much concluded that if vtec is on for an extended length of time thats when it throws the code. I know it is wired correctly, i have already replaced the filter in the solenoid and i change my oil regularly. Any suggestions?
