main bearing
ok so i got a free y8 motor from a friend that was in his car. he took it out because when ti was running it had a chattery noise coming from the block area. the guy who sold the car to him said some main bearing or rod bearing was bad? so i took the head off and planend on putting it on my a6. the y8 block and head looked extra clean inside. on the other hand..my a6 block looks really grimey and dirty and has weird corrosion on the outside and some nasty orange **** on it. so anyways..im wondering if i should just put the head on my a6 or should i fix the bearing? does that sound liek a bearing? it was a weird knocking sort of noise, cant remeber too clear because it was a month ago. what should a good condition a6 block look like on the inside? cause this one is pretty black n nasty. also how hard is it to hcange the bearing. never done any internal work like that. what do u guys think i should do.
just start takin apart the block and track down the problem.....replacing bearings isn't too expensive like 80 bucks or so.....when you take the caps off the rods and you will be able to tell how bad the bearings are worn and whether it has spun a bearing and the crank needs to be turned or not....I was intimidated by internal work at first but last weekend I set this z6 I picked up on an engine stand and in about 2 hours had the motor completely dissasembled and it really wasn't that hard....I dunno I would say just put new bearings in the y8 and use that IMO
If the bearing is spun then the associated journal is probably toast. If you haven't got the proper tools to do the bottom end, save yourself some grief and take it to a machine shop. Putting new bearings on a bad journal is a waste of time and money.

exactly....
Spending the extra money now will save you in the end......
Rebuild the Y8 block.

yep, you need to use plastiguage to measure all oil clearances. and while u're at it, check all your cylinder bores if still within the service limits.
as mentioned, if you don't have the proper tools then save your time and money and bring ur block to the nearest machine shop u trust
check my build-up in my sig. just waiting for the plastiguage to arrive since the local store just run out of stock
and almost all cyl bores are out of service limit so i need some OS slugs in there.

ok hrm how many types of bearings are there down there? i looked on ebay and saw main and rod bearings for like 10 bucks for a set..seems like a good deal? how hard woul dit be to do that. ive done lots of work on my car, as long as i have instructions then id be good. is it difficult? or do you just bolton. also do you guys think that a rackety noise from the block would be a bearing??? anything else it could be?
