Default Simple question reguarding old Honda

Hey

I'm new to the honda scene. I have a dsm so therefore I need a backup car so I bought a 1985 Honda Accord SE-i. It's fuel injected and SOHC.

I wanted to know if the motor was an interference motor or not.

It has 90k miles and I heard that timing belts need to be changed around then on hondas. If it isn't interference I'll just drive it til the belt goes then fix it otherwise I'll do it now. I also heard that the old school honda's had belts due every 60k instead of 90k. Please help a fellow car guy out.

Thanks

most people say that most honda motors are interference motors, not sure about the old accords but i am assuming that they would be the same

That's why I asked a SPECIFIC question to the car. Because this was the first year for fuel injection and everything is different.

Anyone know if a 1985 Honda Accord SE-i is an interference motor or not and when is the belt due to be changed?

Thanks.

Yes it is, all Honda's are. If you just bought it I would go ahead and do it.

Edit: forgot about the interval part. I'm pretty sure anything that old is going to be 60 still. I can't remember when it went up.

Can someone confirm this?

Does a 1985 Honda Accord SE-i have an interference motor? I've heard that some honda motors are NOT interference.

If it is interference motor what is the scheduled time to replace it 60k or 90k?

Not trying to be rude but I would really like a solid answer to these questions. Thanks once again for your help!

No one on this board (well, maybe a very very select few) are going to give you a solid answer. If you REALLY want to find out, try to find a few things.

Compression height of the piston, piston/deck clearance, max lift of valves.

I have been a Honda/Acura tech for almost 6 years. I have never ever seen a motor that was not interference. Some of the very very early designs that were Chrysler redesigns...that sucked... may not have been but we are talking older than you or I will ever see. Concrete enough? Do the T-belt now. You have no way of knowing wether or not it is ready to go and it is just too simple to ignore. Most dealerships don't even have factory manuals that far back anymore so if wringing that potential 30K more is worth it to you contact Honda North America. And in regards to letting it break because it's not interference....the last three times I have seen this was on motors that are supposedly not, sporting bent valves. Never just let it break. The belt costs less than a tow bill.

Hey

Thanks a ton for the reply's. I was thinking it was going to be a much more complex job than what it is going to be. Dsm timing belts are a pain in the *** but this looks to be EXTREMELY easy. I'm planning just to do it tomorrow before work. Just to clarify I wasn't questioning you're judgement moto1320 but you just seemed a little unsure. Sorry to doubt.

Thanks for the help guys!

I'll back him up. There's a bulletin from Honda talking about this, and it says that every Honda and Acura (with the exception of the Passport which is Isuzu trash anyway) is an interference motor and can have valve damage from a broken timing belt. The belt isn't that hard and it's cheap insurance.
