Default How common is it to break....

Has anyone ever broken the crank pulley bolt off before...
I'm struggling with taking that bolt off. In the past, a torch and my air gun has worked fine, but now on my project car, its a little stubborn. I'm kinda scared that I might break it using a breaker bar??? How common is it for these to break?

Don't know how common it is, but I regularly use a breaker bar on mine, with no problems yet.

I just put a big *** bar on it and jump on it, its normnally breaks it loose. We had the smae problem on my friends del sol VTEC and we were scared also.

Just put the biggest pole you have on a wrench and go to work.

good question

When I took mine off we had a 8ft pole (Not kidding) and two guys jumping on it, and it was still a bitch to break off. Do yourself a favor tho and get the tool for taking the things off it will make it somewhat easier, not to mention the fact it virtually eliminates the chance of you breaking something in the process.

Trust me dude, that bolt doesnt break it breaks tools.

Now with that said, show no mercy because that bolt shows you none. Give it everything you got. Make sure you have craftsman or some lifetime brand tool because you will need to bring them back after this.

Gotta love having a VERY expensive air gun, it takes those off w/ ease.

ive broken that bolt before, just once, on a 1.5 non vtec, i was happy it broke just so it would come off, then i used a small screw drive to rotate it out, if it does break u should be able to just spin the rest of the broken piece out. we broke it because the breaker bar wouldnt work so we put the bar on it and bumped the motor over, that got 'er done...

yeah... got one of craftsman's top of the line pro guns... not working... and i've got the hex honda crank pulley remover tool too.... guess i'm just gonna have to take your guys' word for it and screw worrying about breaking it... the other option i thought of was to take some map gas to it... thought it might be a little extreme though?!?

Lever force (torque) will do it more easilly than heat.

What's the torque on that bolt after say a 2-3 year period? What rating impact gun is needed to remove it? Will the same gun work for the axle nut?

Also, what does it have to be torqued to when replacing?

thanks for all the help guys... went to the home depot and got myself a 5 ft pole last night... did the trick.

clutcher... don't know what rating impact gun is needed, but i have a 500 lbs gun. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. axle nut breaks loose a lot easier than the crank pulley one.

I go with that as well. My air compressor was the best investment I have ever made. An expensive one, but a good one.

I used a craftsman 3/4 inch drive rachet with a deep socket and a 30lb sledge and just hit the end of the
ratchet and broke it free. haha I broke the ratchet though.

Just keep at it. Get a big *** breaker bar. Once you hear that first crack you'll be like "WTF?!?!?!", then the second one, and then after the third the ****** usually lets go.

It could be worse...check out the latest crank pulley bolt thread in the prelude forum. That guy has already destroyed two quality extensions trying to extract his bolt...
