Default OT: Digital camera advise

Ok so I've seen many pics on here and I was wondering what kind of camera people are using. To give you a quick run down I'm looking for something for my girlfriend for her B-day. She was big into photography but had an all manual 35mm Nikon. I'm looking to get her a Digi with many of the features found on the manual camera. I know Yoshi and others turn out some great pics so any help would be appreciated. Mods move if necessary.

There are LOTS of good cameras in that price range.

These are somewhat higher-end pro type cameras (teaser).

This site seems to have a lot of features for comparing digicams.

Canon A95 sounds like a good candidate. It's probably the most widely used camera on honda-tech.

Well, then you have to step into the DSLR range. I'd look into a Canon Digital Rebel (300D) - good starter DSLR. You can get just the body alone for close to what your price range currently is... but if you want it with the kit lens expect to pay around $900.

i personally dont like canon's.....i'm majorin in photo at school and like the other guy said u wanna start lookin into DSLR if u wanna change lens, and depending on the use of the camera (printing fairly large prints) i wouldnt say anymore than 4 megapixels but since u said shes big into photo high megapixels are always nice Fuji isnt a bad brand either if your lookin at brand names...i just read about the fujifilm finepix S3 Pro.....sounds like a greast cam. 6 megs but acts like 12 cuz of how its made...this cam is also a DSLR.....you could also check into this site

didn't he say under 500 guys??

so, for under 500 new... i dont know of any with your criteria. Take away the swapping lenses criteria and I say:

nikon coolpix 5700. Fantastic camera. I'm not sure about the lowest 'new' price... but here's one on B&H:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bn...s=USE

In fact, there are two coolpix 8700 (8mp, slightly different than 5700 but not by much) on B&H's website right now for 500 + shipping. They are 'used' but they rate them as a 10. I've bought several used cameras on B&H they rated as 9 or 10 and honestly I would have never known minus the packaging. My experience (dad too) with B&H has been very, very good over the years. Link:

otherwise the price goes up for DLSR's like these well informed peoples have already mentioned

I use the Canon A80. I like it, alot. It is a good n00b camera. I'm going to upgrade when extra cash comes along

The A95 would get my vote

Glad j00 like our pix.

You had mentioned that your girlfriend had a Nikon. Does she still have the lenses for it? If so, what is it? Let me know b/c if the lenses are decent, it would be good to get a nikon dSLR. $500 buget will be tough, but Nikon will be releasing a D50 soon and should be priced below the current D70.

Other have mentioned some good options already, but here are two sleeper cameras. Panasonic DMC-FZ5 and DMC-FZ20. Can read reviews here. Fits your criteria...5mp, $500. Judging from the samples, it takes photos well. Both models have sweet lenses built into it.

If you have any other questions, post here, PM me or even email me.
