Default Thermostat Wont Open

I was driving around last night just cruising town to town puttin miles on my new clutch. Slowly the temp of the car would rise and fall above normal. So I drove a lil more and it got a lil higher but then lower. I stopped checked out under the hood realized I was leakin a lil. I had some spare fluid so I filled it up. I made it home actually to my job. By then it was leaking worse. Still didnt overheat or anything. Turned out I blew the coolant hose for the heater core I think. Goes from the firewall to the back of the block. Anyways I replaced it courtesy of Mobil a Freebie hose (cuz their nice guys lol). Filled up the radiator and drove home. I noticed it still got hot. So I check it out and the one clamp wasnt tightened all the way so fluid would squeeze out of the end of it. I clamped it down put more fluid in and the car was getting Red hot. No leaks full fluid. I checked the hoses and realized now my lower Hose is ice cold. Which would mean my thermostat isnt opening. I jammed it open and the temp went down. Car stays ice cold acording to the Dash temp now. So I put another thermostat in and it still did the same thing. The hose was frozen cold not lettin any fluid circulate. So I jammed it open for now so it dont overheat. What could be this cause. The thermostat was brand new when I put it in. Its totally clean. I had new coolant in. Any ideas? 98 b18c1 (gsr) in 91 Integra Rs

you need to bleed the air out of the system ... sounds like you have air trapped in the motor and it is making the engine overheat

Yea,. Remove your radiator cap and leave the car running for 10 minutes... If it overflows, just leave it.. If it needs more h2o...Then refill it.

Just leave it running without the cap, just to let all the bubbles escape.

I did that I refilled it 3 times at least. And air would keep the thermostat from opening?

When you bleed the system make sure you have the heater on full blast.

The thermostat can go bad. There is a test to see if they work. But you have to take it out, and and that point you might as well put a new one in. They are only about $10-15

the test is something like you take it out and suspend it in water, brong the water up to a certain temp, and it should open. But like i said you allready have it out, why not jsut replace it.

I had one that would open in the water, but would not in the car. Ever since then i have just replaced it.

the way i get the air out of the system is by turning that small nut/bolt on the upper radiator connection to the block, and have the car on.. it should spit out the fluid, then pause then spit more out.. that's getting the air out of the system during that pause. and it works for me everytime.

just take the thermostat out and replace it.. its like 5 bucks maybe even cheaper. its not like its an expensive peice to replace

Ok I replaced the thermostat with a brand new one. got the air out. Started the car without the car on waited about 20 mins with the heat blastin. close it up took it for a ride and it started to rise up about 3 quarters then bounced for like 2-3 mins then it was at normal temp. Got to dunkin donuts bottom hose was still ice cold. Sat with friend for about 15 mins got in the car started it up for about 5 mins the temp was bouncin half to 3 quarters then was normal again. Still the bottom hose freezin cold. If I open the thermostat with a screw driver and leave it open the car runs cold by fluid flows right throw the hose no problem. I am lost on what to do next. Ive tried 3 thermostats that all work. Bled the air out. What now?

i had this problem 2 with a new thermastat. I wanted 2 b cheap and buy an autozone 1. The car still overheated, Paid the 17 bucks 4 the honda 1 and havetn had a prob sence. And 2 bleed the system there is a little nipple on the thermastat housing, Take a 12mm socket and openit. Let it run with the heat on untill all the air comes out

I didnt know there was a difference in thermostats. I dont wanna go up to honda with my pants down to get raped for a got damn piece of metal. I will prolly just drill 2 small holes in the thermostat now to make it work better. Also I dont have that lil nipple on my GSr. I know what your talking about cuz I had it on my Ls beforehand.

make sure that you have it on the wrong way.. it could be a simple mistake.. i doubt this could be it, but its a maybe.

also you might just have your system cloged up with sediments from the fluid.. our older vehicles can get this and might require a flush.

Everything is the right way. How could I do a flush? Get all this crap outta there. The motor is only a 98 gsr anyway. But its a last resort. radiator is a 91 though. Also had some stop leak ran through at one point.

get the honda one. it is a "safety" thermostat. when it fails, it faills in the open position. not the closed position. when it fails in the open position your car willl not heat up very quickly at all if ever. if a cheap autozone one fails it fails in the closed position and you can cook your motor very quickly. ask me how i know.

also, the easiest way that i have found to flush is to get one of those prestone in-line hose thingys and put it in the heater hose. just hook up a garden hose to it and turn it on. it gets all of the air out.

Is that the only alternative? The thermostat just wont open by itself. or all the way. The car doesnt overheat it just goes from like 3 quarters to normal occansionally. There has to be something else to do. besides just buy a Honda one. Cuz if I spend more money and a piece of **** metal thing just to find out its not that . I will be pissed.
