Default b18 or b20 ls vtec or b20vtec i have all the parts which one to choose

here is the deal i have the option of building two motors
the problems reliability "i am tired of replacing motors" !!!!!!!!!
octane of gas, is 12.5 comp to high for street driven
i have all the necessary parts to build the short blocks
first option b20:::::::::::::
84.5 mm bore, knife edged crank, forged i beam rods 12.5 compression cp pistons
or or
LS block ls rods with arp bolts and used b16 pr3 pistons same crank as above

after seeing the recent ls vtec builds on HT making over 200 whp on pump gas street driven is making me lean towards lsvtec
how much more potential do i have with the b20 over the ls?
or should i build the b20 and when it blows use the b18 as back up

well 12.5:1 is to much for compression. 11.5:1 should be your max as far as keeping it reliable. knife edged crank is not good for reliability... and you say you want to use used pr3 pistons? this means that you want to use piston that are almost 15 years old... not smart. you need to do alittle bit more research.

sell all the stuff you have and buy a low mileage gsr engine and buy bolt ons and cams and have some head work done. and engine management and tuning...... bam almost 200 whp and decent reliablity.

i'd say it's all on how high you wanna rev.

i'd say stay w/ the b20 block first, but make sure you get cams that will make power in the lower rpm's and not rev to high, because of the stock b20 sleeves

cam selection would be bc3+ or bc4's

the torque from a 2.0 l is awesome but people often over rev this sucker like krazy.

if you want pretty good reliability i would go w/ ls/vtec

ls block
ls crankshaft
ls rods (shot peened)
arp rod bolts
pr3 pistons or p30 BRAND NEW (don't skimp on the bottom end)
balance entire bottom end

vtec head ported n polished
ctr cams
aebs manifold (if b16 head is used)
65mm tb

a good header: dtr/smsp/hytech

a b16 tranny or type r tranny

p28 obd1 hondata

oem reliability that you will see power

Well i do agree with pr0honda on the part of selling both and buying a gsr. I would sell both blocks and buy a gsr block... but then again i am ahuge PMR supporter.

as for you question.. i would go with the b20 over the ls. I dont feel like the difference in the reliability factor is going to be all the large. Plus since you have the ls block already, just keep it for back up.
Also, even though a few ls-vtecs have been making over 200 lately, it also seems as if B20s with a simular head package is making around 220...

both will yield the same thing if you bore them out to 84.5mm or so...

I have a set of pistons if you are intrested. Perfect for an all motor setup.

I dunno if this is what you meant quick1racer but i would take the b16 haed and throw it on the b20.. more displacement then the ls and 12.5 CR is kinda high but you should be fine.. do some crank work and dont rev crazy and youll have yourself a nice setup
