Strange problems with B16
Hey guys, I've experienced some wierd stuff lately.
First: my stock tach never read correctly which didn't surprise me, but recently my aftermarket tach stopped reading correctly. On the highway revving about 4-5k if I would give it some gas the needles on BOTH of the tachs would jump forward and then jump back, as if bouncing off the rev limiter but the engine was accellerating smoothly.
Also in town if I get on it in 1st gear and hit vtec, the tach will almost wrap around from the 8 to the 1.
Second: After getting off the highway after a long drive, going through town a bit, and then shutting it off - it would die upon attempt to restart it. I only barely got it going by giving it gas at start up and holding it at 2k for awhile.
Finally: It used about a quart of oil over about 450 miles (drove to Nashville from IL) but there were some 100+ mph pulls on the way and I was revving 4-5k almost all the way there. I figured the oil just broke down or there was some blowby or something. It was not burning it, I had people follow me to confirm it, and it is not leaking anything. I've been checking the level regularly and it has not changed much if at all since then.
Any ideas what might be wrong with the tach(s)? I have new plugs, wires, dizzy cap looks new, so I'm thinking it's something else to do with the ignition.
Forgot to add that this is a 91 CRX HF w/ PR3 ECU and B16A and my aftermarket tach is a Sunpro Supertach II with the green wire tapped into the blue wire on the dizzy.

I have also heard that when your alternator starts to go out that it will cause your tach to jump back and forth but i have never seen this happen before so your guess is as good as mine but you might want to check that out if it is true.

I don't have a radio, my car is pretty much gutted. Also, where would I get an ignitor for an OBD-0 B16? Would I have to buy an entire new dizzy? If not which car would I buy it for? Same for the alternator.

Yeah, as far as I know that is the case, but I would try to use one from a 90-91 Integra (closest match for your application). The alternator is not the issue, that will cause a whole different set of problems, from what you are describing, my guess would be a faulty ignitor.
