Weight reduction: removing heat shield under car?
I was looking to do a little weight reduction on my 1995 Si and was wondering if removing the heat shield that is on the bottom of the car between the underbody and the exhaust piping would help any. Also, would removing this shield have any negative effects? I have an aftermarket exhaust all the way back (header, cat, cat-back) if that makes any difference. Thanks.
the floor of your car would get very very hot. Your shifter would get hot to the touch, to the point of it not being very fun to grab. Not to mention the pipe runs right by your gas tank.
The cat gets up to a rediculously hot temp.
your only other bet would be to replace it with that heat blanket stuff from summit, (metal is heavier then fabric?) but I don't know how much weight that will save.

Hmmm.. I took mine off a couple years ago because they were vibrating really loud at 2500 rpms and I haven't noticed any difference as far as extra heat.

i'm gonna have to take mine off; they vibrate something awful as of late. no idea why it started. makes me feel better that you guys had no troubles.
Haha empathy, I'm about 5'10" 160 lbs., don't think I could afford to lose much. As for those of you who said to do it, you are talking about the whole heat shield attached to the car and not just the little heat shield on the stock catalytic converter right? Just checking, and thanks.
Oh yea, and does anyone know about how much the whole thing ways?

You do realize it weights no more than 5 pounds I would imagine. I took out my A/C, moved battery to back, took out emissions ****, stripped all the sound deadening in the car, it all adds up. So if you are serious about loosing weight then dont bother with the sheilds until very last but if you want take them off, they can be a big bitch though, plus i think you have to take your whole exhaust off to get at some bolts. Good Luck!

NO they do NOT weight even 5 lbs.....they are 1/8" metal and dont weigh ****.....
you could fart and loose more weight than you would from taking them off......
mine rattled also though.....so i took them off.....and i dont notice any negative effects, and definately no burning shifter......

ok we deffnatly arent talking bout the same covers...im not talkifn bout the cat convertor cover...im talking about the one that runs throught the whole exhaust and yes it does weigh more then 5lbs.
Well once I get my new exhaust and put it on I'll take it off and weigh them so we can all get a real answear.
I think they are gonna be pretty heavy though, I remember working on my friends WRX and helping him go back to stock before he sold it. And his stock up pipe with all the heat shields and crap was ALOT heavier then his aftermarket one, and same with the downpipe. Just weighing the heat shield that goes over the header is 2.5lbs, so I think the ones under the body are gonna be over 5.

i would love to see this guys.....i will see the real weight when it gets here....but even 20 lbs so widely distributed will make about as much difference as washing the dead bugs off your windshield......
They are very thin sheet metal stamped to fit the passage.
I also really doubt they are over 5 lb's, if that. IMO, the benefits of losing them do not come close to outweighing the pain of removing them and *possible* consequences.

Hey "all mOtor h23", do you have a cardomain site or other website with some info/pics about your car? What kinda mods do you have and do you have any dyno sheets/track slips? Sorry to be nosey, I'm just always interested in other H23ers that decide to go all motor like myself.
