Hello all, I'm in need of some advice.
I'm in the process of putting on another cylinder head to replace one with bent valves. Well, during the process I found a 1cm vertical scratch on the number 1 cylinder wall. The scratch is very faint and is very hard to see but I CAN barely catch it with my fingernail. I know something needs to be done about this but I'm unsure if I need to rehone the entire cylinder or is there something I can do about the scratch. It does NOT run the entire lenth of the cylinder wall, just 1 cm long about 1 inch down from the top of the block. Any input or advice on what I should do? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Ideally, you would go ahead and have the cylinder honed. Trying to correct just a part of the wall will probably make it worse.

 

Deffinatly re-hone it. if you do i m pretty sure youll need new rings, as well, in order to get a good seal.

 

If thats the case, should I hone all 4 cylinders and get new rings for them all? Or will doing one cylinder suffice? I mean I don't want to cheap out on something this critical but the labor to get this all done can add up.
Unless I can hone them myself... can anyone give me some tip on doing this? I've done swaps and head swaps and such, but I've never done an engine build before.

 

you prolly should re-hone and re-ring the block. As far as honing it yourself i dont think its too difficult but i just like leaving that up to my maching shop, just to ensure a good even hone.

 

Yea thats true. I plan on just bringing the block to a machine shop and have them hone it down.
How difficult is it to remove the pins from the pistons? Can I do this without a hydro press?

 

I use a hone that goes in a hand drill, just dont overdo it and lube it.

 

Can you give me some details on that honing device? Also how were you able to make sure the hones were even?

 

why would he rering the block? if anything, just go oversize and rebore.

 

im pretty sure you should get new rings when you hone the cylinders. Bc the old rings have set to the original hone and with a fresh hone you need fresh rings in order to get them to seat properly.

 

General rule of thumb, always get new piston rings when you take the pistons out, the old ones wont seal anymore, even if you dont do anything to the block. Always new rings.
