Default B18c vs. B18c1

What is the difference in a B18c and a B18c1? I've noticed from doing research on the motors that the B18c is always listed with more horsepower. I plan on doing the engine swap with the B18c. I was just curious as to what the difference was between the too. Also, the motor will be using an Obd1 ecu and my civic ex is a 98 with a obd2 ecu. I've heard that i could us my engine harness for the swap. Is this correct? Also, where would be the best place to look for engine mounts for the swap? Is there a complete kit for the swap? If so, who sells it?

b18c is the jdm version of either a GSR or type r just make sure if youre looking for the type r

There is no factory block stamp that says B18CR. Both the JDM GSR (SiR-G) and the ITR are B18C. JDM motors do not use a suffix number after the block type like USDM motors.

JDM B18C = GSR and ITR
USDM B18C1 = GSR
USDM B18C5 = ITR

Correct, the best way to tell the diff, is the head (gsr is stamped P72, type r is pr3) and the intake manifolds are very different.

That's quite an understatement.

Yeah, Japenese motors don't have that 2nd number- B18Cx

As far as which is better for the price, that all depends on your priorities! The price difference will get you bolt-ons for the GSR motor, but ITR is probably still making more power...and you still haven't tapped into those 'easy' ways to make power, which are already gone on the GSR motor.

Its not exactly a black and white issue, but I would say that if you plan on swapping out pistons and changing the CR, don't bother with the ITR motor. I don't see either one as having more overall 'potential' than the other, as they both have similar aluminum 1.8L blocks and twin cam vtec heads.

besides looking almost exactly alike, the JDM B18C (SiR-G) engine has higher compression pistons, the ecu programming is different (and actually shitty - better to run a US P72 ecu with this motor - its like a night/day difference), gear ratios are the same between the US & JDM B18C's minus the fact that the JDM one has an optional LSD, I believe the cam profile is a little more aggressive on the JDM SiR-G engine too, and the fact about the motor ID (B18C=JDM / B18C1=US).

A lot of GSR parts have "P72" as a designated part number, which is also shared with the ITR & CTR engines, mainly the block molding.

This all depends on how cheap you can get the GSR. If you have to pay the going retail price for the GSR, then the ITR is actually the better deal. Although the ITR costs more, the GSR tends to be an expensive motor in its own right. And the difference in price is less than $1000. For this relatively small (at least as performance goes) amount of money, you won't make a GSR motor beat an ITR motor.

On the other hand, you are alot more likely to come across a GSR motor that costs ALOT less than retail. I, for instance, picked up a GSR longblock about a year ago for $1000. If you can get a motor THIS cheap (or maybe for a little more), then the GSR is DEFINITELY the better deal for the money.
