Default I have a problem; need advice

I have a 95 eg. My brother and I recently just pulled out the old 8-valve and swapped in a d16y7. I'm planning on doing a minime eventually, but I'll have to postpone that for now. Whenever we put the new engine (I got it from a friend for $150 after he did a b16a2 swap), we installed a skunk2 intake and act clutch as well. At first, I had vacuum line problems that I fixed. Now it's starting to overheat setting at idle. The cooling fan turns on and the thermostat is working. The radiator is new. The guy that I got the engine from said that it recently had a new water pump and timing belt installed. When we first put that new engine in, I had no problems and it ran like a bat-out-a-hell. I actually managed to run a 9.36 in the 1/8 with most of the bolt-ons. It seems to have lost a lot of power. It only overheats if I'm sitting a stop for a while. It isn't lossing coolant. It was burning oil(it stopped because I realized that it was sucking a lot through the Injen intake; fixed it). The idle acts a little funny. Sometimes it surges when taking off whenever the car is cold. The tranny is the old cx. I'm keeping it for boost. I'm stumped. I know that it either has something to do with the head gasket and/or the water pump. How do you know when either has failed?

Check your coolant level and bleed it. That should fix your overheating.

Coolant level seems to be fine; I'm missing the bleed off valve to bleed it off.
