Transmission Problem, Clutch? Synchro?
About a week ago I was racing my 5th gen. When I jammed it into 3rd gear I felt something a little weird like a little pop or something. Well I came to a stop light and i felt my gears. 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears all where hard to get into gear and felt soft and hesitant, it was like i couldnt feel if it was in gear or not. I took it home and checked the fluid and it seemed alright. I then removed the whole center console peice to see if maybe something was wrong under there, everything seemed alright there as well. I took it to work and one of the older techs there felt it and said it feels like a synchro gone bad, but three of them? I came home and read up on Honda-Tech about it and most people only have a problem with the 3rd gear, well mine is 1st, 3rd, and 5th...all three went bad buy shifting into one gear. I was courious to know if this really is the problem. Another thing that would probably be useful to know if that when I'm not in gear, and my foot if off the clutch I can hear a faint grinding noise, but it goes away when the clutch is engaged. Any help would be appreciated..

had the same problem twice (in a swapped car). both times they broke while shifting hard into 3rd. Does it feel different when you move the shifter from 2nd or 4th to neutral too? Disconnect the shift cable from the lever on the tranny and see how easily the cable slides.

Okay, thanks for your input guys. I'm going to check out the shift linkage tomorrow, I'm glad to hear that it's the linkage, less expensive, at least I think so?
yes, you can use accord shift cables too (93+ i believe). just make sure that's where your problem is first. It sounds like it, but you should be 100% sure before you start buying parts to fix it.

i doubt its in the linkage because if you can still shift into the gears then the cables must be working. and if the cable was bad you'd have the same problem with 2,4,r because it uses the same one. sounds like u messed something up in the shift rails inside the tranny. when you shift into 1,3,5 slowly can you feel if the shift detent is working properly? also the soft grinding noise means one of ur bearings is going bad most likely the first input shaft bearing. its not really gonna hurt it to drive it unless it gets louder.

if the outer shielding pulls away from the end of the cable (where it is clipped into place on the bracket on the tranny), then the shielding will move with the cable when you move it, usually bunching up at the end and stopping the cable. This is only a problem when pushing the shifter forward, as you can always pull the cable back easily. This is what happened to me twice. The first cable never went completely bad, but the second one did. When it started out, I would occasionally miss 3rd when racing, because the faster you shift, the more of a problem you will have. I could shift really slowly, and it would work fine. Gradually it got worse, until I lost 1,3,5 gears, and if I put it in 2,4,R I would have to pop the hood and manually pull the lever into neutral, since the cable wouldn't push it forward. I'm not saying that his problem isn't in the tranny, because it could be either, but he can't rule out the cables yet.

Find the two levers on top of the tranny that the shift cables connect to. Try to move them back and forth to see if they move easily (they probably won't). If not, take the shift cables off the levers and try to move them again. If they move easier, then the problem is in your cables. If they still don't move well, then take it to a shop.
