Mobil made a new oil! supposedly for cars with longer service intervals
i went ot walmart in dixon yesterday and bumped into Mobil reps that were promoting a new line of "extended life" oil by Mobil. There are three oils in this new lineup: Mobil 1, Mobil 7500, and Mobil 5000. They are "designed" to last for 10,000 miles, 7500miles, and 5000miles, respectively. They are supposed to have 30% more additives (including detergents, anti-wear additives and whatnot), but i'm not sure that more necessarily means better. The Mobil 1 (10000miles) is full syn, 7500 is a blend, and 5000 is a conventional. Mobil 1 costs $5.40 at walmart, Mobil 7500 costs around $3 and Mobil 5000 costs around $2, i forget exactly.
The Mobil1 full syn caught my attention because the new 7th gen accord has recommended service intervals of 10k miles. i'm concerned that the oil will thin to crap by then, and was wondering what oil out there will be best for my next change. what do you guys think?
more info can be found at Mobil's website:

Ok so you go spend the money on this 10,000 mile life oil.... what advantages are there... as far as i know they haven't changed anything in the oil filter to make it last longer. so yea go buy the new improved 10,000 mile but you will still have to change it 3000-5000 miles..... just a thought?
for the 7th gen, oil changes are recommend for "severe" conditions at 5k. otherwise, for normal conditions, it is recommended 10k. as for the oil filters not even lasting over 5k, then what do you think honda uses?? i doubt that honda developed a new filter to last 10k for the 7th gen. im willing to bet theyre still using the same ol' honda filters, just like they use on the 6th gen and previous. as for my car, i'm planning on using mobil1 with a k&n filter. i did that on my 93 eg and the oil looked pretty nice even after 3k.
i dont know if i'd trust this new oil either, but its only $0.50 more than the current mobil1 full syn. just wondering if you guys think it would do any harm. mobil supposedly did lab tests, and also field tests on cabs in las vegas.

most synthetics on the market, including mobil, are what's called a group III base stock. that means it's just super refined petroleum based oil to the point where it has almost all the same characteristics of synthetic. group IV base stock means that it's 100% synthetic, no petroleum. this generally means that it will last longer and can have better lubricative qualities. what i run in my car is motul 5/30 (group IV base stock, 100% synthetic) which i get in a 5 liter jug for $20 through the dealer i work at.
by the way, a while ago a motorcycle mag (sportrider i think?) did a huge oil write up, synthetic vs. non synthetic, etc etc. great article. even though most of the tests are based on motorcycle oils, a lot of the information still applies. good reading. there's also a huge thread about it on http://www.bayarearidersforum.com which i'll hunt down and link to if i get around to it.
