Default crank pulley

yes i know its been covered a million times. so i read that by putting the car in 5th and stomping on the brake keeps it from moving. it didnt seem to work like that for me though. also they make a tool thats hex shaped to put in the pulley to keep it from turning..only..my pully from my a6 doesnt have a hex shape in there. its just round for the socket to go. so im gonna try to just put a screwdriver into the flywheel but i dont know where to put my big *** breaker bar so i can work it. i mean..unless i jacked my car up liek 5 feet, there no way i would be able to use it? maybe if i bought a like 3 foot extension..i doubt that would work though? how do u guys do it with a breaker bar. theres no room in the engine bay to maneuver the bar enough.

you jack the car up and lay on the ground pushing the breaker bar up towards the hood. Also try using a combination (box and open end) wrench and a bolt. Put the open end on the pressure plate of the flywheel and bolt it to the tranny housing.

i nkow about the wrench trick, but that can only be done with the tranny off though right? hrm if i pulled the breaker bar up towards the hood, then that would be tightening the bolt..?

you need a chain wrench to counter the pulley going clockwise... have someone hold that and then with the breakerbar under the car ( take your engine mud guard (those plastic things)and i am assuming you got your car jack up)...once you get that bolt loose spray that baby up wid either WD-40 or PB catalyst penetrator.... remember there is a key so dont lose that....

Mac makes an awesome tool for this. Its a "hand impact" power bar thing...

We just put two bolts in the pulley and put a 1/2"x4' steel bar between the two bolts and went crazy on the pulley bolt. We finally got it, I fell, the steel bar was bent, but we got it.

i still dont get how uhave enough room under the car to move the breaker bar. i have a 2 foot bar and a 3 foot pipe. there no way i will be able to get any leverage and already broke 2 12" breaker bars. i was thinking remove the driver side mount so i can get a full range of motion but there is a metal piece that is stuck to the block that wont come out.

We just jacked the car up a little bit and put some jack stands under it.

Usually when I can't get a bolt loose, I heat it up with a propane torch. I picked one up from Walmart for $20. Heat it up and that usually breaks free some of that rust or loctite. I did that for the crank pulley but it didn't work. I tried a few of those other tricks and they didn't work.

Best thing you can do, is get yourself some air tools. I picked up a compressor and an impact wrench from Harbor Freight and in less than a minute that sucka was off. Awesome stuff and now you have an impact wrench!!!

BTW, I had a 2 ft long breaker bar with a pipe with the car on jack stands and I was MOVING the car. Seriously, you're going to hurt yourself if you keep trying. Get the cheapo air compressor ($80) and spend a bit more on the wrench ($50).

you have to have at least a 1000 lb torque wrench to get it off....cheapy impact wrenches wont even get my lugs off...

I tried my 150 psi compressor and Blue Point impact and the bolt wouldn't move for me. I don't think you had the E brake on, or the way you were using the jack stands was the correct way if the car was moving....

the compressor has very little to do with it...its the impact wrench not having enough torque...

hey loco rex, when you did yours and it was on the jackstand..did you have the car in gear? or did the breaker bar in the hub prevetn it from moving? also how did you get any power with that giant extension, i know when using a long one its hard to get it to stay still while u pull on it.
