for conventional, most will recommend Castrol GTX for any time in the vehicle's life....

for synthetic, most will recommend Mobil1

Royal Purple is the best that's out there in my opinion. It lasts for a lot longer than any other brand too. You might have to order it though from some place b/c a lot of places don't carry it. For a case of 12 its right around $70 but hey, "you pay for what you get" doesn't lie in this case.

I still think Royal Purple is better than any. It can be used 4 race apps or otherwise & has a longer life than castrol. just depends on what you personally like though.

Use a synthetic motor oil in a high mileage engine that's seen conventional most of its life and watch the oil burn/leak/disappear.

http://www.bobistheoilguy.com will have answers to your questions, no doubt.
