Problem: Heavy oil leak from Oil pump/crank/rear main seal. Help a brotha out Part2.
Hey guys, I'm having more car trouble and am looking for help by opinions.
What happened
It was last saturday; The week prior I had cleaned/tucked wires/painted pipes in my engine bay(which must have taken 14 hours). I was planning to go to the track the next day(sunday). I had borrowed some slicks from Suprdave, had a dumptube made, burned a new Hondata chip, got a new w/g spring, and got 3 gallons of 100 octane for safety sake.
I was driving home from the Whip, waited a while to let the oil come up to operating temperature and hit some boost to see how the dumptube would change the sound of my setup. (which sounded a lot better somehow). Anywho, as I hit boost, one of my damn chargepipes let go. Oh well, no biggie I thought. Drove home in vacuum. Got home, turned off the car, and do a little work. Check oil, fine. Re-connect charge pipe with 2 clamps instead of 1, done.
Ran inside, called a friend who was about to watch the Illinois game. He invited me over so I grabbed a chocolate chip muffin and a bottle of water and was on my way.
Hopped in my car, and the engine wont even turn over. The battery is less than a year old so it should be fine (although I didnt do a batt test.) But I digress, the motor wasnt cranking over so I grabbed the jumper cables popped my hood, then popped my lawnmower hood. Connected the cables and let it sit for a few seconds. Primed the fuel system, waited for it to pressurize and attempted to start the car.
To no suprise the car started, and I walked around to the lawnmower to unhook the cables. When I went over to disconnect the cables on my car I noticed oil splashing around my engine bay. ****! Check the floor after the car had been running for 5 seconds, and theres a pile of oil bigger than a basketball on the floor. ****!
So I turned the car off and started inspecting, I found that the oil pump seal was leaking and the timing belt was catching the leaking oil and throwing it all over my freshly cleaned engine bay.
My motor has a fresh oil pump and bottom end rebuild (~2k miles max)
What do you think caused the problem?
Clogged PCV valve?
Too much crankcase pressure from no catch can?
HELP!!!!!!!

a seal behind you timing belt cover obviously let go, im not sure what kind of honda this is but installing the crank seal on the timing belt side was a delicate task when i built my motor , the spring in the seal kept poping out, if you didn't take care or install a seal all the way that could be your problem

I know the seal obviously isn't doing its job. Replacing the seal will also be a bitch, and I cant do it (tools are shady+bad knee) so I will have to pay money.
The reason I posted this is so I can maybe figure out why it happened, so when I replace the seal it doesnt just blow itself out again.
Thanks

Did you lube or put some lube on the inside of the seal? A dry fire will ruin a new seal. Good luck figuring this one out.

If the seal isn't put in at the proper depth, the timing belt drive gear can rip it to shreds.
Or if there is too much crank pressure, the seal can be blown out...maybe even blown into the back of the timing belt drive gear.

Do you have an oil pressure gauge? I had a similar problem but thankfully for an oil press. gauge, it saved my motor from locking up. Problem: crank walked...busted the oil pump gears to pieces....scorched up main bearings (cyl#4) and thrust washers.

Nope. Was it a dsm?
Im really glad I caught this problem before I did damage

YES...Honda's do have crankwalk...believe it or not. I had two new ITR oil pumps destroyed by this.

Yea, it can happen. But it will happen about 10x more frequently on a 7 bolt DSM...
