How Good Would A Type R Tranny Be For A Boosted Ls?
I have the chance to buy a Type R Tranny for a pretty good price right now. My Ls Tranny is acting up on me a little when I try to downshift from 5th down to 2nd or 1st so I figure this would be a good investment. How good will the gearing be for my Ls? I'm planning on running 14 psi in the future (if that changes anything). Thanks for the input.
how often do you downshift from 5 to 2??? and 5 to 1?!?!?!?! and you wonder why your tranny is acting up?? gl with the type r tranny...
hahahaha kasso lovin the sig mang. just buy another ls tranny for like 300 and buy a quaife lsd with the money u have left over instead of buying the itr tranny.

when I said that I meant downshift from 5th to 4th then 3rd. when I try to get 2nd or 1st it doesn't want to move over into the slots/gears unless I giggle the shifter around a bit. sometimes it will go right into the gears. weirdest tranny issue I've ever heard of.
i think the gearing would be to short/close for a bossted ls motor.... ls's werent meant to rev as high as the r motor... unless you have it built to handle the high revs of the r motor you wouldnt be able to use the potentil of the tranny... i would consider another ls tranny with the quaife lsd.... like stated above.... better for your motor and the boost

i got a gsr on my boosted ls, and i think its too short anyways, but i have crower cams and valvetrain so i make power all the way to 8k. Shifting at 7k my topend was only 135mph.

You guys need to do some serious research on gear ratios.
Shorter gears = Faster acceleration. It doesn't matter if you are turbocharged, supercharged, N/A...etc. If you want to accelerate faster, you get shorter gear ratios. However, where your powerband is and the gear ratios must match in order for them to work well together.
People ask this question once a month it seems...

^ yea i know short gears can make u go faster. too bad, if u have gears too short, u will never get traction with a higher output car, not to mention shifting all the time. and thats why i think the type r would be too short. did u not see the post about the guy with the boosted LS with a GSR complaing about the gears being to short? and the type r is even shorter than that....
And with that, you are also implying that a turbocharged type r should swap it's transmission out to an LS transmission.
See what I'm sayin'? I don't expect people to go putting a custom 6.75 FD ratio in their transmissions, but, bottom line is if you want to accelerate faster, shorter gears will help you do that.
Even though the Type R gears are shorter, you are not going to be shifting as frequently as you think. No more than you would with the LS tranny, just quicker because your redline will approach faster than it would with the LS, which is good, it means you're going faster, quicker.
It's really up to the car builder. It's all his choice. If he knows the facts and understands how things work, they'll be able to make a sound decision on their own.
Cheers!

Wow some people truely are stupid on this board
I've been wondering the same thing when I go boost. I always figured the type r would be too short and not allow me to get traction. But then you need to remember it comes with lsd. A friend of mine has a turboed jdm b16 with the jdm b16 tranny with the optional LSD. Even though his gearing is so short, with the lsd he gets absoultly no wheel hop and he grabs traction in 2nd gear, and this is without it being tuned.
Yes too short of a gearing can be bad because of traction loss. But people never interject the fact that you can combat that loss of traction with tuning. Hondata and Neptune both have traction control features. So with that and an lsd traction shouldn't be as big of a problem. Plus for the cost of you to pick up another LS tranny and then buy and install a quafie lsd, probably would be cheaper to pick up a type r tranny.

One important aspect of the higher FD is that you are going slower in mph at each upshift. That means that if you have torque your tires are going to spin more easily than if you were going at a faster mph.
The preference could also depend on the size of the turbo you have. If you have a large turbo that doesn't spool until 5500 rpm then an ITR tranny would be nice to buzz up through the rpms.
It is my personal preference to use an LS trans with a boosted LS. The LS engine obviously does not rev as high as the ITR and its powerband is in the mid rpms so you want to keep it in that range for as long as possible. You want gearing that puts you around your max power for as long as possible. Look at the powerglide trannies that the domestics use - they only have 2 gears! Slamming through the gears does not mean you are accelerating faster. If you are outside of your powerband you would actually be accelerating slower.
I have a friend who is currently putting a b20z into an EG and is having these same concerns. I told him to get an LS tranny but other people are telling him to get an ITR. What is the concensus on that swap?

One thing to note is that an ITR LSD does not grab instantly when going in a straight line - it takes a short time for the clutches to grab which means your drive wheel is still spinning at least until the second tire grabs.....
Why do drag racers put spools in their transmissions - to lock both wheels at the same speed for straight line acceleration. Aftermarket LSDs react a little differently but of course they are more $$. Go LS with an aftermarket LSD.

I am just trying to add to the discussion, I wasn't meaning to try and say you were wrong.
On the LSD note - one thing I do know is that I have a gsr engine and tranny (in an EG) but I installed an ITR LSD myself. Even with the LSD my tires still spin going into second. I have zero traction through first, second and third on anything except dry pavement. I don't want people to think that the ITR LSD works miracles, it is not great for straight line acceleration.

i swear i'll get you if you say that again.
imo, the typre r gears are too short for turbo (depending on setup) because often you just zip through them and that makes it hard to drive fast. that's why i like the gsr tranny. not too short, not too long.
and if you say "longer gears are better for boost," then you're a complete and total fool.
