Shifter slop on 4th gen prelude
Several days ago, I started having about 1.5" of free movement in my shifter. This movement only works up and down. Gate selection movement works fine. Pulled the center console out and my shift linkage is connected to the shifter perfectly. The slop is somewhere either on my shift linkage (not likely IMO, as it shifts perfectly well, except for the extra 1.5" in each throw), or in my tranny.
Anybody have any ideas?
EDIT: Update lower down here

read my thread about taking the slop out of your shifter.

It's not that kind of slop. Note in my sig that i've already replaced the bushings with washers. The movement i'm talking about doesn't want to recenter itself. I could move it to anywhere in its range of motion and it'll just stay there.
A friend of mine had a similar problem. Wasn't as bad as the way you describe, but there was about 1/2" of extra front/rear play in the shifter after it was in gear. A few weeks after the problem surfaced, he broke a shift cable.

Update: had a friend take a look at it. The shifter cables seem fine. The slop is in either the shift tower or inside the actual transmission. Is there anything that tends to go wrong in the shift tower, or am I just completely screwed?
No you are not completely screwed. I had the exact same problem, when I shifted hard it would be able to pull all the way back, etc, not recenter. I was using a short shifter adaptor at the time, and it was pissing me off too, but still driveable.
Solution: get a forbidden short shifter. After I installed it, problem was gone completely. Im not sure why, but it might have had to do with the adaptor.

Bump cuz its still not fixed and i'm still looking for input. I've been driving like i'm 80 all week, it's really annoying.
Homesauce: It's not the shifter itself, although what you're describing is the same problem as mine. The shift cables are mounted perfectly to the shifter.

Update:
Finally got to take my tranny apart. If anybody has the FSM, the parts missing are the lock washer and the bolt holding it down (13 and 14 for anybody with a lookup thingy...forgot what thats called). Not sure where they went, but they mustve been there at some time because the problem wasn't always there.
Either way, ordered new ones for $10 shipped at the dealer today. I'll take pics tomoro about what's missing.

nope, the clips are there. It's the bolt that's inside the shifter. I'm going to go take pictures in a sec.
EDIT: pictures:
Circled in red is what should be there, but isn't:

There's the shift arm, without lock washer and bolt.

And the removed shift tower, because I like taking pictures:

Update: The old lock bolt apparently BROKE OFF inside where it should be. Going to go drill it out soon, hopefully that'll be the end of this bullshit.
This is the exact same problem I had. I extracted the bolt from the shaft and replaced it with a good one from the hardware store. I wasn't aware that there was a lock washer on there too. How important is it?
lock washers are a definite necessity inside transmissions......go get one.....
that sucks phil, so im guessing you dont remember initially doing that....like slamming one gear extra hard or something...
