!!My new shifter moddification=smoother shifting!!
Today I took apart my shifter linkage and cleaned and regreased everything and it felt smoother but not exactly what I was going for. I noticed that when I fully engauge a gear the entire base plate would kinda rock back and forth. I looked at the plate and it was held to the tranny tunnel by really soft rubber grommet type things. I removed the upper gromets and the lower ones as well and used shorter bolts and washers to bolt the base plate directly to the tranny tunnel.
The result is zero slop, and I notice the shift gates are much more clearly defined and each gear change is smoother due to the base plate being more solidly anchored. There are really no downsides to this mod either, the bushings don't isolate any vibrations due to the metal sleeve inside of them. And the base plate sits maybe 3-5 mm lower now and no this shouldn't harm the tranny at all since the cables and plate are all one peace and do not move independantly of eachother.
I also have a shorth shifter adptor and it feels much better now

Replace #23 with a shorter bolt and wide washer
remove #13 #14 and #16

This was in my original post
my prelude is a 92 I belive it will only work for 4th gens since the 5th gen base plate is configured differently.

I think the only reason for them to be there is to make the shifter less suceptable to vibrations transmitted form the tranny to the shifter, but I have noticed to difference in vibrations at all.

They're not the same, but something could be done w/ the 5th gen one I'm sure.

yeah here is a picture of what I'm talking about. Remove the 4 rubber doughnuts on the four corners.

Remove these bottom ones, too.

5th gens dont have that "floating" feeling when shifting. I know what you mean though. On almost all swapped car ive driven if you have ur hand on the shifter you can feel it sway back and forth.

just take your old ones to the hardwars store to match up the threads on the little toll thingy they have there.

I just finished doing this mod. It gets a
for the results. If you are planning on doing it the bolts are m8x1.25 at ace hardware. The bolts i used were a little over a inch long. Make sure you get washers with the bolts.

5th gens have the same bushings, they just look different
My cars and all my friends cars, from Hondas to Toyotas to DSM's, have all had this simple procedure performed. It makes a big difference, and feels great.
