ok..I have a 91 crx with a jdm b16a and s1 trany(i think its the b16 one).I need to smog this car soon and I"m in the bay area.but the person that owned the car before me is an idiot and he took the car like it is to smog station and now the car has to see a ref..I don't have thousands of dollars to spend so in you guys opinion what would be easiest to put in the car?for all non-cali people, it has to be usdm..
thanks

I believe he's saying you could get an obd0 b18a1 and ECU for cheap, bolt it to that tranny you have, and it would plug in just like your b16a minus the wires for VTEC.
Trending Topics
it dosent matter if its JDM, just bring all the emmissions stuff to CALI-DM, and theres a bunch of threads of getting stuffed bar'ed, sence you have the B16, make it like the del sol Vtec. but you do have to do a full obd 1 conversion
wait a second...
Why can't he just make the B16 OBD1 with a Del Sol Computer and a USDM Intake manifold?
http://www.rywire.com
Complete OBD1 Conversion for your B16, read down the bottom of the first page
it says: "Attention California B-Series Owners - Make your swap CA-Smog legal with Rywire!"
Guess what
You can be legal without doing an engine swap.
B16's are legal in the US, and BAR Certifiable in California.

I might be wrong but I just spent an hour on the phone with a bar guy telling me that NO jdm engine will pass the visual inspection in cali, because they are ILLEGAL
in california..
as to the b18 idea, doesn't there have to be a usdm civic equivilent to the engine, not just usdm engine?I found a b18a1 with a warranty for a descent price.I just wanted to make sure b4 I put alot of time into..anyone else done this?

I BAR'ed a B18A1 in my CRX in January. I passed the first time. It isn't that hard. No there doesn't have to be a USDM Civic equivalent, the engine just needs to be OEM specs like it is from it's original, stock host chassis. The engine can't be from an older car than yours. And it must be from the same class of vehicle, for example no CRV engines because they are considered trucks.

ok thanks for the info...which ref did you make appointment with?the one in alameda?
At Los Positas College in Livermore.
BTW, make sure everything is in good working order and stuff, the BAR refs check EVERYTHING. They even checked to make sure I had a B18A head and ecu and stuff. Also, make sure your engine is legit w/ papers. They may check into it like they did for mine.

That sucks bro!!!! In South California (San Diego) the BAR doesn’t care if it’s JDM or not. I have seen people pass with D15B VTEC and B18C.
Check this site for info.
