Default Confused, can you help?

As I'm doing an oil change on my car, I noticed something strange. The timing cover seems to have been trimed, and the gears are showing. Can anyone explain what that's all about? Car is a 94 HB DX w/D15B7

Looks normal to me, but then again I haven't seen a D15 in a while. Is it causing a problem, I wouldn't worry about it too much if it's not.

i know its not common but it is possible for a rock/stone to get up in there and cause the belt to jump and lose timing. i've even heard of cases where tools were dropped when working on the car while running and cause serious problems.
Usually people leave the cam gears exposed but not the lower cover

Actually, the timing cover is there, but it looks like whom ever owned the car before, actually took the cover off, and cut out both sides by hand (looks like he did it with a saw) for the gears to fit. What would have made him do that?

Because it probally didn't go right back on and he decided to chop it up. I know tons of people who do stuff like that every time they work on cars.
