I am planning on doing a gsr swap on my 99 civic and want to know if I could put a type r head on that motor and if I can will it make much of a difference.

 

You should search. Yes you can easilly put an ITR head onto a GSR, and you will see a significant power gain, as long as the head is complete. But the GSR bottom end wont like revving as high as the ITR head will let you.

 

so how high can you rev with the gsr block vs the ITR block?

 

actually I think you will lose some compression with the itr head on gsr block.

 

so what should I do to help my bottom end?

 

new piston/rods will help

Yes you will. You'd be better off getting cams,valvetrain, having the GSR head PnPed, and getting an ITR style IM for it, then chipping the ECU to run it.

Saying the GSR bottom end won't rev like the ITR one is lame. The difference is minimal between the two. Rods are slightly stronger on ITR and the pistons are obviously different. Thats it. YES, it can rev just a high.

That it? I had my whole lower assembly balanced, so I guess that makes it the same now.

the type-r crank is a bit stronger as is the rods...the pistons are similar yet the type r are a bit stronger. the valve train in the type r is better being it has a mild port and polish from factory and the duration of the cams is more on the type R...the type motor though is just a slightly upgraded gs-r, the intkae manifold is also diff.

We know these basics.. And from what I can see, the crank is NO STRONGER then a GSR one, just balanced better for high rpm use.

i got a itr block with a gsr head if u want it

 

keep your head so u dont lose compression and just get the itr valvetrain. youll be alot happier and the gsr block can handle revving that high but u have to get your ecu chipped cuz the stock one wont let u rev that high

Sorry but I have to disagree with you, a gsr and itr head is totally different. If you knew what you were talking about a itr motor uses a pr3 which is the same as a b16 but with better valvetrain and slightly ported, etc. Putting a itr head on a gsr block will work but you would have to change the gsr pistons for some itr pistons so you will get your higher compression back. Unless you are going turbo then that would be a benfit for you...lower compression.
