Default Tech Help: Removing rear 14mm shock bolt

How do I remove the 14mm bolt that holds the rear shocks to the LCA? I have tried box end wrenches, sockets using a breaker bar. Soaked it with WD40. The bolt isn't budging. My car is only 4 years old.

A shop took the bolt out before with no problems. I'm thinking of picking up an electric impact wrench and see if that works. The front suspension was very easy to do with hand tools. With the rears, I'm stumped on what to do.

Electric impact wrench? When the shop took the bolt out, what did they use to re-tighten it? If a breaker bar doesn't work, it must not be big enough

use a 2ft breaker bar to get more torque and do it nice and slow
so you dont break the bolt....

The electirc impact gusn suck!!! I borrowed my friend dewalt and it took longer to break bolts loos than if I had of done it with hand tools. Air tools are the only way to go!!

What was the torque on that impact? Mine is 230 ft. lbs. and it's the best thing I've bought. It's had so much use! It's good if you don't want to have a compressor and all the air stuff.

A good impact, electric or otherwise, will get that bolt off. Just make sure you're not torqing on the nut, bacause it's welded on.

It sounds like the shop that put it back together may have used their super-high torque impact gun to put it back together. Combine that with some rust and it's going to be tough to get off. You best bet is to either bring it to a shop to just have the bolts loosened with a air impact gun or get a bigger breaker bar, I'm talking 3-4' if needed. That should get the bitch loose. Just make sure the wrench or socket is on the head of the bolt square so you don't mess it up. I wouldn't fool around with an electric impact gun, you can put more force on it with a breaker bar.

Not sure what the torque # was. They have two 1/2" one at 1600 and 1500 inch pounds. It had a hard time pulling the 14mm bolts for my motor mounts. I was not impressed at all.

Would anyone else recemond maybe doing a little heating to try and help break it free???

P.S. Never heat the head of a bolt, it will weaken it. If you play with fire be VERY carefull, espically that close to the gas tank!!

The Electric impact gun that goes up to 230ft/lbs did nothing.
I used a 3 feet breaker bar and it finally nudged.

1 done, 1 to go

So far I am happy I didn't have to drill it out. what a pain in the ***

Yea, those electric guns are crap. Just go at the other one with the breaker bar again and you should be good to go. When you reinstall the bolts be sure to use anti-seize on the bolt threads. You can get it at any auto parts store. This will insure they don't get seized like that again on you. It's good to put on all brake and suspension parts.

DON'T GET A BREAKER BAR! It's siezed in the bushing and you'll just snap the bolt.

You can risk it if you want, but those 14mm bolts snap easily, and when they do it's a freakin PAIN IN THE ***. You can't back em out, you can't drill through them, you're screwed.

They used 17mm in the front, and those never break, but the 14mm in the back are notorious for snapping.

I did my whole suspension using a breaking bar, they all worked good, 2nd last bolt, snap, the head came clean off, I tried everything to get it out, eventually I had to cut through my trailing arm, have the bushing pressed out, new one pressed in, the re-weld my trailing arm back together.

If it's stuck that good then take it into a shop and have them bust it loose, it will be the best $15 you ever spent, trust me. Especially considering a new bolt alone is like $8 from Acura, a new bushing pressed in is like $30.

Of course replacing the bushing is an otion to consider. Its easy once you get the bolt out. Like a lot of people I had to cut my old shocks off. The bolt broke with a regular socket wrench after soaking in pb blaster for a week and being heated with a torch. You could hit the bolt with a sledge hammer and it would just bounce back. I think I used
a c clamp to push it out. Hacksaw for the bushing and it taps right out. The new polyurethane bushings press in by hand. Does rust bind to polyurethane like those rubber bushings? No anti-seize but I greased the hell out of it.

Got the other bolt off with ease using a breaker bar.

It is also a pain in the butt trying to get the shock/spring out when you've taken all the bolts out.

Cool, glad you got it off. I'm surprised 230ft lbs didn't move it, they must have really torqued it on there!!!!!

Whats the deal with electric impacts? Why are they so bad?

Seriously, I'm curious, not trying to start something. Mine has been a valuable part of my toolbox. Installed/replaced suspension components, used on a spring compressor, replaced driveaxles, and makes taking wheels off a breeze.

Also really good on those pesky battery terminals.

I just dont think the electir ons have enough grunt to them. Even though it is 230foot#'s it is just not enought pure force.

Put it this way i used one to re tighten my drive side motor mount bolts (all3) and then i went back over with a regualr wrench and got at least another 1/2 turn, and i was not using a break bar or anything.

When you tightened the bolts did you just let it turn till it stopped or did you let it sit there for a few seconds and impact it?
