GOOD INFO for Skunk2 cam gear owners/curious HTer's
Well i heard some people having problems with fitment of skunk2's cam gears. Some were saying that the gear hole isn't deep enough and the cam retaining bolt wasn't even clamping the side of the of the gear. I just thought i'd show that my recently bought set fit well. As you can see the gear protrude the perfect small amount past the cam, the washer is clearly pressing firmly against the cam gear and all is well. Also the TDC and Up marks were dead on in my installation, perhaps they refined the gears and old sets have problems. here's the pic.
I thought i should add this. I needed to modify the rear timing cover a little as well for the cam gears. The skunk2 gear doesn't have the deep rear spacing like a stock cam gear. The cover rubs on the inner (blue) section on the rear of the gear. So i had to cut the semi-circle protrusions off to clear the gears and keep plastic shavings out of my timing belt area. Never saw this mentioned before, so i thought i should post it. Here is the pic which is of course worth 1000 words.

i dont know if they did it for that specific reason, but people have been cutting their TB covers for a long time.

yes i did..i didnt know this would happen...so i shaved away at it without takin the cams back out...it was very hard and time consuming because i didnt want any shavings to fall down into the lower plastics...scared the hell outta me when i first started the car up...

We have inspected some of our camshafts that have experienced premature wear on the area where the cam key slides into place. We have concluded that this type of damage was caused by incorrectly manufactured cam gears that did not provide a seating surface for the cam bolt.

Well, i am sure the buddy clubs are fine too. I'm not sure if you read my post or not. It shows the skunk2 gear DID fit properly so the bolt and washer DO press firmly against the cam gear face.

Had the exact same issue with a set of ST Corsa gears so it's not just the Skunk2's that have this problem. Had to cut it just like you did.

Yes...agreed. I merely posted general information that everyone should know about when selecting a set of cam gears for their engine.

Now all Bc needs to do is put Tdc marking on their gears so people can install their timming belt properly. alot of people have trouble as there's no markings..

Something always good to remember is to double check the adjustment bolts on the camgears to ensure they are tight out of the box etc.

Our cam gears are most definately marked! In addition, they are made out of FORGED 7075-T6 Aircraft Aluminum. They are much stronger and more reliable than other cam gears you will find in the marketplace today. These gears are of better quality than normal run off the mill, hard anodized coated, 6061 billet aluminum CNC type of products.

I can't see it in the picture (so it might be that I am missing the marks, no pun intended), but the factory gears have a TDC mark on the cam (12 o'clock, and I think 3,6, and 9 o'clock if I remember correctly) along with the word "UP". The BC's only have what looks like a vernier scale at 2 and 10 o'clock. The 2 & 10 o'clock marks are nice for setting the cam, but don't tell you anything about the
My Skunk 2's have little indentations on the black "gear" face at 12, 3 & 9 o'clock, (comes in handy when setting lash), I do not see anything like that on the BC's.
I think that's what TBone is referring to.
Kinda like a underdrive pulley that doesn't have the 16° advance mark on it, WTF is that?

No offenc but reread what I posted.... You need to put the marks in that allow you to do simple things like put the timming belt on correctly, do valve adjustments correctly, do leak down test correctly.. Either the factory line style or simple up marks.. I know that i have sold a few sets of the BC geras and all the sets sold came back with complaints about this issue.. I addressed the issue with Art when he was there but noting apparently came of it..
