Default Clunking.... Transmission...?!

Alright, this problem has slowly been progressing over the last few weeks, and now it's just plain bad.

It started fairly intermittently, but now it happens almost every time. When I hit the brakes, it doesn't matter wether I'm going 5mph or 60 mph, the front of the car clunks and you can actually feel the clunk through the chassis. Very loud inside the car, but not even noticable outside the car. From the inside of the car it sounds like it's comming from the transmission area. This used to only happen during braking, but now happens slightly on acceleration and even sharp slow turning.

I put the car on jack stands to see if I could isolate the problem but it's barely audible even right up to the engine compartment.

First things I thought of were suspension, brakes and motor mounts, all of which seem fine. Could it be transmission internals? The car otherwise shifts and drives great except for a worn 2nd gear syncro.

Axles seem fine as well. Now, when I grab both the axles while they're in the transmission and try to twist them (car's off the ground still), there's a little bit of play. Should it be like that or should it be solid?

Opinions, suggestions or input?

Thanks in advance!

Sounds like it could be your front crossmember bolts. My crx did the same thing a while back and that was it. I'd just check soem bolts in the frontend first and see if they are all tight.

CV's are fine, both axles are only 6 months old...

I'll check the crossmember though. I didn't actually try to torque the bolts or anything, just felt with my hands and shook everything pretty hard but nothing was noticably loose.

It might be the radius rods. I forgot to tighten mine back down after changing my crossmember on time and it made a clunking noise like your describing.

Have to move some suspension bits like the shock fork to check really, but it seems all tight and good....

whiterex, you got it right on. Both bolts just needed to be tightened about 1 turn each. Thanks man!

Will it hurt your alignment to just tighten those bolts? I choose to replace the crossmember with a tractionbar from http://www.full-race.com
