Question about VTEC engagement in B16
OK my question is why dosent VTEC kick in all the time at 4400 like its supposed to. Oil level is good, its up to operating temperature but sometimes it dosent "sound" like its kicking in at the stock limit. Also at other times it sounds like it hits at 5000. Whats up with this. Almost stock b16, stock ecu (auto) dunno if that has anything to do with it or not. Any help? Does the vtec only work under WOT?
Considering everything is functioning as it should be, Vtec will engage when the motor starts spinning at a predesignated rpm, set by the ECU. On b16's, I'm pretty sure its something like 5200rpm.
You might want to check your vtec pressure switch if its not engaging at the right point.

Check the grounds on your Oil sensors....I have it grounded on the firewall. Make sure your sensors are all giving out the right voltage....I know it sucks but you want vtec right? after that i'm stumped.....Oil pressure, Oil, Sensors, Ecu, motor.
In that order it would be something wrong.

I thought my VTEC wasn't engaging for a while too when cruising but then I realized that at steady part throttle cruising it's hard to "hear" VTEC kick it if it does at all. Then I would floor it and sure enough...VTEC kicks in. At close to WOT you can really hear and feel the switch over.
