Car Audio equipment in House
Alight I'm heading off to college pretty soon, and am wondering what to do with my system. My subwoofer boxes are pretty large and need the space for hauling crap back and forth (5hr drive). So I'm wondering if there is anyway to run an old car HeadUnit, and my amplifier and subwoofers, in my dorm/appartment?
me3, but before i had my subs running off of my home system, the reciever and radio were hooked to them but never had enough power to handle it, i wanna know if i could also throw in the amp! thatd be p i m p i n
ya, like i've seen people have a car HU mounted in their garage, and running some car speakers, but i'm just wondering how to convert 110v to 12v, other than using a battery charger.
You'll need one of these: http://www.baproducts.com/pyramid.htm .
However, you'll need a pretty big one to power an amp... I think we run a 40 amp supply behind our board at the store...

You can usually run car speakers on a home system, you might need to put two subs in series. But to run a car amp in the house... Its a whole lot cheaper to buy used home gear.

You need some heavy duty power supplies. For a car radio a small 15 amp power supply is fine. If you want to run an amp then it is not worth it because large power supplies are expensive.

if you dont know what a converter is, you shouldnt even be messin with anything electrical.
it converts power. they make them for automobiles, etc. its like an amplifier for a power source.
just like how you need an amplifire to boost your stock deck power so you can run subs.. thats pretty much what a "converter" does.. also known as a "power converter"

I understand what a power converter is, and I have wired up dozens of car stereos. But he said, "Go buy a converter at Wal-Mart." Now, I am assuming what you and he alike, are both referring to is a DC to AC power "inverter" http://www.jcwhitney.com/autop...10101 which allows you to say, run a blender in your car. However I am wanting to put my car stereo equipment in home, and run it off of 110v power, therefor having one of these power inverters would be useless because you couldn't plug it into anything. What several people have told me, is that I need a AC to DC power "converter" which will plug into a 110v source and give out 12v power. However these pieces of equipment run over $300 for one with enough amps to run a amplifier.
