Catalytic Converter (What's the worst thing that can happen)
'98 Integra RS, 3-door, 5-speed. 138K
I was just informed that I need a new cat & probably a new oxygen sensor.
Could someone please tell me what is the worst thing that can happen if I don't fix this ASAP???
I am supposed to be driving from NJ to MI and back (2,000 round trip) over the next 4-5 days. Please tell me if I should cancel this trip due to the amount of miles, and the distance from home...
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks!

According to the mechanic, my CAT is shot. The two O2 sensors are good, but apparently there is a huge chance that one of the sensors will be ruined when they replace the CAT. (I forgot which one).
I guess my question really boils down to: Should I attempt to drive 2,000 miles in the next week, or so with my current problems...
Thanks for the responses!

I dont understand how one of your sensors is going to get "ruined" when they replace the cat, if it does then I hope they are paying for it other wise tell them to go **** off and do it yourself.

o2 sensor might be seized in the cat, it has probly overheated, the threads might be ruined if they try to reuse the o2 sensor. im no expert but that might be the reason.
if you cat is clogged, dont drive the car for a long trip, you might damage the other o2 sensor, crack your exhaust manifold and burn your valves.

Yea, you really need to ask the tech WHY its bad, i was a tech at a honda dealership, iv'e seen some shady **** working there. Im willing to bet you took your car in to get it checked for your trip, the tech couldnt find anything bad so ding ding, high miles, bad cat.
Get some proof.
