adding weight, to a car. how did you do it?
guys for the nhra class, that i would like to compete in i'm about 150LBS too light. if in the past you have been in the same senario, my question is how did you add the weight(following nhra rules)? where did you buy the materials? and if you have pictures of the weight added, please post them TIA. btw this weight addition, will be done in my 88crx!
As I was told by the director you could bolt lead weights directly to the frame.. In the case of your car i would have each corner of the car weighed and i'd balance it with distributing the weight across the car..
Good luck too you..

keeping it low as possible.
on dirt track cars, we used to get pieces of 2x3 rectangle shape tubing, weld one end closed, than fill it with lead, and weld the other end shut. drill holes in it, than bolt it down.

If it was me and I was in that position and had a little time:
I would find where you want to add the weight. Put the car on independent scales (each tire having its own). fyi..I would then balance out the front end then work my way to the rear. On front wheel drive cars its obvious that you want to have weight in front of or above the front wheels.
Now do something similar to above. Get some steel pipe and weld one end closed then cut out the hole for the other end from sheet metal. Now get an old pot from the thrift store and buy some lead shot. Put the pipe and the cap (so you can account for that weight also) where you want the weight and find out how much lead shot you need. Then go over to your outside grill and melt the lead shot in the pot. Go over to the pipe and fill it with the pre-measured lead shot. Weld the cap on the pipe and your done.
I have seen in some old school drag cars where they would drill a hole in the cage bars and pour it into the cage piping so that you dont see it. I think this is not a legal way of doing it in any of the sanctioning bodies...but its worth asking them!
Good luck

guys, thankx for all your advice. i might take my car to a truck scale tomorrow, to see how much weight i will need to add. i have done as much possible, to keep the weight as far foward as posible. bigger wheels, heavier seats, etc... i'll have to ask people at work, where can i find the lead pellets!

i was trying to find pictures of JGTC ballast weight, no luck. what about getting a bigger battery? what exactly have you done that has put it underweight?

hey thankx for the picture, i was thinking of using something like that. i just never pictured those steel bars, with 1/2 bolts through them. i'll see what the car weights by 11am, and i'll make some decisions after that!

I have no experience with this, but if I was in a similar situation, I might:
1. Remove bumper support
2. Fill it with sand
3. Weld sheetmetal over holes and gaps.
4. Re-install bumper support
and if that doesn't cover the full amount you need to lose, you could put something under the carpet. . . heavy and flat. . . roof shingles perhaps, lol.
