Do you have a timing gun? You'll want to get one for the ignition timing. Its not too hard on a SOHC.

First, you'll need to jump the little ecu plug that is hanging out just beneath the carpet with a bit of wire.

Then, you loosen the 3 12mm bots on the distributor, then hook up the timing gun. TIP: On a timing gun the part that clamps around your #1 spark plug wire must face a specific direction for it to work correctly.

While the engine is running you point the timing gun down towards the crank pulley. There is a notch on the cam pulley cover to help you see where the white marks are on the crank pully (not on the belt, on the inside edge of the pulley itself). The idea is use the timing gun to synch up the white marks on the pulley with the notch.

By rocking the loosened distributor forward, you can retard timing, and rocking it back toward the firewall will advance it.

hmm first of all, I am assuming you haven't put the timing belt on.

1) Place the piston @ #1 cylinder at TDC.
2) Make sure your cam is set correctly as well at TDC. (there should be marks)
3) Make sure the crankshaft pulley is lined up on w/ the arrows on the oil pump signifying that everything is at TDC.
4) Using the D16Z6 (92-95 civic ex) timing belt, place it on the assembly w/o moving anything.
5) Put the distributor on correctly (might need to take apart and align the rotor to TDC)

Hopefully some of that helped.

thats how u know ur crank is at TDC. The crank pulley also has a mark on it. Line it up with the oil pump arrow.

First time I ever took an engine apart, I didn't take it apart at TDC. Staring at this site for a while really helped me out:
http://auto.howstuffworks.com/engine4.htm
Notice the cam turns one revolution, and the crank turns two revolutions per combustion cycle.

You want TDC in cylander 1, the one all the way to the left. So the piston in cylander 1 is at the top of it's stroke, and the #1 intake valve has just opened and closed.

Turn your crank around a few times. Get the #1 piston at the very top of it's stroke, and the little mark on the crank pulley to line up with the oil pump pointer.

Turn the cam around a few times. Watch the valves open & close. The #1 intake valve should open then close. The "up" mark on the cam gear should be up, the little lines on either side should be lined up the top of the head.

Bolt that **** together. Put the timing belt on.

Look at your dizzy. Notice where the #1 plug wire is. Take off the cap. Spin the rotor so it points to where the #1 plug wire is.

Bolt that **** together.

Adjust your timing:
