Code 20
I started my car up 2day and it is flashing a code 20. I tried swapping a computers as well, but no luck. I did a serch and i found out that if you use an older si ecu in a 90-91 it may search for the eld which isnt there. Does this work the same way for just a normal dual point ecu? Will this affect the way my engine runs, and how do i get rid of this?
ya actually i just finished putting the engine back in. I painted the engine, engine bay, and did a auto to manual conversion. any ideas where i shuld start looking for grounds?

Yeah, basically wherever a ground is lol look for it.....
If you put a engine in Id htink you either have a manual or have somewhat of an idea of where the grounds were.
This might be old news but I know that from other guys experience the only way the ever fixed there code 20 was either finding a bad ground or replacing the fuse box on the passenger side engine compartment strut tower....

grounds:
1. tranny to body to neg battery terminal
2. thermostat to wiring harness
3. valve cover to body
Brush them off good with wire brush, make sure they are contacting metal on the body.

No i didnt fix it because i found out what the problem is. my ecu is throwing a code 20 because im using an '88 ecu in a 91, the '88s used an eld in the fuse box, in 90-91 they stopped using them(eld). The reason it throws a code 20 is because the 88 ecu is seraring for the eld that dosnt exist (cuz my cars a 91). It still runs fine. There r three ways to get rid of the code: 1. tear aprt the ecu 2. get a 90-91 ecu 3. change fuse box. I was going to change the fuse box but the wires for the eld dont exist in my car (i think), i did a search and didnt find any results, I guess that means no one has put an 88 fuse box into a 91 or it means im not very good at searching. If i cant find anything out about swapping fuse boxes i think im going to leave it cuz im going to b doing the mpfi swap and the ecu is for a 91
Did u do anywiring to yur car lately? that culd cause a code 9. code 9 is cylinder position sensor so u might wanna check yur dizzy.

well i just bought a new dizzy and dat got my car running again. when it started throwing a CEL dats when my car just idle for a minute and just dies, so i went to go buy me a new dizzy and thought dat code 9 would go away and get my car running again. it got my car running but the code 9 and 20 is still on and it idles funny, like when im driving the idle stays at around 1200-1500rpm it doesnt drop down to 8 or 900rpm like before. ive been running the chipped p75 ecu for 4 or 5 months now and it never threw dat code. but the car is running fine it just wories me dat the CEL is on when im driving around, you nah i mean.
My car idled really high 4 a bit 2 b4. The easiest thing to check is the coolant level..lol, i know it sounds dumb but when i put the new engine in i started it up with out any coolant just 2 c if it was gunna run and it idled high. When i added coolant it was better but still idled a bit high, what my problem was that the throttle cable was sticking a little(idled around 1200) because i painted the engine and the bay. Its probably unlikely but u might as well give it a try, when its idling high like that just reach down and pull the pedal backwards (opposite of accelerating) and see if the tach drops
. other than that id say try replacing or cleaning yur idle air valve. Did u have the code 20 b4 u changed the dizzy???

gyea it had code 20 and code 9 before i changed da dizy. before that the car just idles for a minute and just dies, since da new dizzy its been running but with the CEL. YES i reset the ecu already. if i let the car warm up in da morning, the CEL comes on whenever the idle drops to 1000rpm. ionno mang i might change the coolant or change da fuse box? ionno im lost.
if a bad ignitor is causing the code 20 to come on, dat means the car sometimes wont start rite? well my car is running fine except for that idle problem dat started after the new dizzy i put on.
I dont really know what to say. u probably have the code 20 because uve changed the ecu. u shuld make a new sticky and see what other people think (cuz i got nothing lol). Actually try testing ALL of yur engine grounds. That is the only other thing that i know of that will cause a code 20, just grab a test light, attach the aligator clip to the + terminal on yur battery and test all yur engine grounds. You might wanna check yur coolant level just to b sure. Thats all I can think of... sorry lol
