HELP!! just got done doing headgasket.
oK SO I Just got done reassembling the head back onto the block. changed all fluids, cams lubed properly, distributor is good, spark plugs and wires good, and everything else done right. Started car, ran very rough without a constant idle and died almost instantly. i think it might be the ignition timing. . . . need some help, any ideas??

1. Double check cam timing. Make sure all your marks line up.
2. Did you use a timing light when you put the dizzy back on?
3. Compression test the car. Maybe the HG didn't seat correctly.

HEADgasket sealed fine. it turns over, but wont stay running for long. maybe just a few seconds. im thinking its the ignition timing maybe???

I just got freaked out when it was running all rough and choppy, as far as the timing goes, do you think i should check cam timing, or ignition timiing first???

Make sure they were installed correctly. Make sure the 3 o'clock mark on the exhaust cam is lined up with the 9 o'clock mark on the intake cam with both "UP" marks pointing UP (This is TDC for #1) The TDC mark on the crank pulley should also now line up with the timing mark.. If you have adjustable camgears set them at 0.
Then check ignition timing, don't forget to jump the service connector while you're adjusting the timing, put the timing back to 16 degrees BTDC. You should now be good to go.

Did you try any of the 3 things that I said? A car needs three things to run, compression, spark and fuel.
1. Pop the valve cover off, check the cam gears. check the crank. even stick a long screw driver in the cylinders and make sure the piston is at top or bottom when it should be. Make sure your timing is correct
2. get a timing light, adjust the dizzy accordingly. Even if the car doesnt start, you can check timing by just cranking it.
3. compression test. I know you said it seated but how do you really know? maybe you a dowel pin slipped out and you squished it while torqing down the head.
4. If all those test out fine maybe you dropped an injector. The easiest way to check this is take a flathead and hold it up to the injector and then put your ear up to it. You should hear it ticking (opening and closing) and a steady rythm. It sounds silly but I have had to do this several times and found the bad injector. OBD0 injectors really like to fail a lot too. 3 of them were bad on my B16.

ok ok, i know its been awhile bt hooray, i figured out what was wrong. Timing belt was off a tooth or two. Fixed that, it started up , ran choppy, so i reset the idle, and then set the timing, it ran MINT. Then test driving, the temp gauge started going up. I had run into this problem before and i knew what it was. It was the coolant. My method for the coolant is: FILL-BLEED-DRIVE-BLEED-DRIVE-BLEED. Last step is to check and fill if needed. So i knocked this prob outta the way.. Then im driving and some dumb kid in a truck peels out next to me, so i down shift and right as im about to hit VTEC my rpms hit VTEC RPM (rpm when vtec should kick in) IT rev limits and i cannot go past 6000rpm. back at the LAB my buddy and i found it to be the apexi vafc, so we disconnected it (luckliy it isnt tuned yet). and then she ran like the old ef8 beast i knew her to be. Only prob now is the fenders.....gonna have to roll 'em a little cuz the fat enkei RPF1's are rubbing on some superHard bumps and corners. Its also time for....PROJECT INTERIOR!!!!(cuz i bought the car stripped, only the dash and two seats) Ive got the door panels already installed, and some interior that is ready to go in. well ill keep ya all updated....maybe post some pics soon.
